aa-i-aa ga-i-aa mu-i-aa naa-o.
He came and he went, and now, even his name has died.

ipCY pqil sidhu kwv ] (138-1)
pichhai patal sadihu kaav.
After he left, food was offered on leaves, and the birds were called to come and eat.

nwnk mnmuiK AMDu ipAwru ] (138-1)
naanak manmukh anDh pi-aar.
O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs love the darkness.

bwJu gurU fubw sMswru ]2] (138-1)
baajh guroo dubaa sansaar. ||2||
Without the Guru, the world is drowning. ||2||

First Mehl:

ds bwlqix bIs rvix qIsw kw suMdru khwvY ] (138-2)
das baaltan bees ravan teesaa kaa sundar kahaavai.
At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.

cwlIsI puru hoie pcwsI pgu iKsY sTI ky boFypw AwvY ] (138-2)
chaaleesee pur ho-ay pachaasee pag khisai sathee kay bodhaypaa aavai.
At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him.

sqir kw miqhIxu AsIhW kw ivauhwru n pwvY ] (138-3)
satar kaa matiheen aseehaaN kaa vi-uhaar na paavai.
At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.

nvY kw ishjwsxI mUil n jwxY Ap blu ] (138-3)
navai kaa sihjaasnee mool na jaanai ap bal.
At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.

FMFoilmu FUiFmu ifTu mY nwnk jgu DUey kw Dvlhru ]3] (138-4)
dhandholim dhoodhim dith mai naanak jag Dhoo-ay kaa Dhavalhar. ||3||
After seeking and searching for such a long time, O Nanak, I have seen that the world is just a mansion of smoke. ||3||

qUM krqw purKu AgMmu hY Awip isRsit aupwqI ] (138-5)
tooN kartaa purakh agamm hai aap sarisat upaatee.
You, O Creator Lord, are Unfathomable. You Yourself created the Universe,

rMg prMg aupwrjnw bhu bhu ibiD BwqI ] (138-5)
rang parang upaarjanaa baho baho biDh bhaatee.
its colors, qualities and varieties, in so many ways and forms.

qUM jwxih ijin aupweIAY sBu Kylu qumwqI ] (138-6)
tooN jaaneh jin upaa-ee-ai sabh khayl tumaatee.
You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play.

ieik Awvih ieik jwih auiT ibnu nwvY mir jwqI ] (138-6)
ik aavahi ik jaahi uth bin naavai mar jaatee.
Some come, and some arise and depart; but without the Name, all are bound to die.

gurmuiK rMig clUilAw rMig hir rMig rwqI ] (138-7)
gurmukh rang chalooli-aa rang har rang raatee.
The Gurmukhs are imbued with the deep crimson color of the poppy; they are dyed in the color of the Lord's Love.

so syvhu siq inrMjno hir purKu ibDwqI ] (138-7)
so sayvhu sat niranjano har purakh biDhaatee.
So serve the True and Pure Lord, the Supremely Powerful Architect of Destiny.

qUM Awpy Awip sujwxu hY vf purKu vfwqI ] (138-7)
tooN aapay aap sujaan hai vad purakh vadaatee.
You Yourself are All-knowing. O Lord, You are the Greatest of the Great!

jo min iciq quDu iDAwiedy myry sicAw bil bil hau iqn jwqI ]1] (138-8)
jo man chit tuDh Dhi-aa-iday mayray sachi-aa bal bal ha-o tin jaatee. ||1||
O my True Lord, I am a sacrifice, a humble sacrifice, to those who meditate on You within their conscious mind. ||1||

Shalok, First Mehl:

jIau pwie qnu swijAw riKAw bxq bxwie ] (138-9)
jee-o paa-ay tan saaji-aa rakhi-aa banat banaa-ay.
He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created.

AKI dyKY ijhvw bolY kMnI suriq smwie ] (138-9)
akhee daykhai jihvaa bolai kannee surat samaa-ay.
With their eyes, they see, and with their tongues, they speak; with their ears, they bring the mind to awareness.

pYrI clY hQI krxw idqw pYnY Kwie ] (138-10)
pairee chalai hathee karnaa ditaa painai khaa-ay.
With their feet, they walk, and with their hands, they work; they wear and eat whatever is given.

ijin ric ricAw iqsih n jwxY AMDw AMDu kmwie ] (138-10)
jin rach rachi-aa tiseh na jaanai anDhaa anDh kamaa-ay.
They do not know the One who created the Creation. The blind fools do their dark deeds.

jw BjY qw TIkru hovY GwVq GVI n jwie ] (138-11)
jaa bhajai taa theekar hovai ghaarhat gharhee na jaa-ay.
When the pitcher of the body breaks and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again.

nwnk gur ibnu nwih piq piq ivxu pwir n pwie ]1] (138-11)
naanak gur bin naahi pat pat vin paar na paa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, without the Guru, there is no honor; without honor, no one is carried across. ||1||

Second Mehl:

dyNdy Qwvhu idqw cMgw mnmuiK AYsw jwxIAY ] (138-12)
dayNday thaavhu ditaa changa manmukh aisaa jaanee-ai.
They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the self-willed manmukhs.

suriq miq cqurweI qw kI ikAw kir AwiK vKwxIAY ] (138-12)
surat mat chaturaa-ee taa kee ki-aa kar aakh vakhaanee-ai.
What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness?

AMqir bih kY krm kmwvY so chu kuMfI jwxIAY ] (138-13)
antar bahi kai karam kamaavai so chahu kundee jaanee-ai.
The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one's own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions.

jo Drmu kmwvY iqsu Drm nwau hovY pwip kmwxY pwpI jwxIAY ] (138-13)
jo Dharam kamaavai tis Dharam naa-o hovai paap kamaanai paapee jaanee-ai.
One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.

qUM Awpy Kyl krih siB krqy ikAw dUjw AwiK vKwxIAY ] (138-14)
tooN aapay khayl karahi sabh kartay ki-aa doojaa aakh vakhaanee-ai.
You Yourself enact the entire play, O Creator. Why should we speak of any other?

ijcru qyrI joiq iqcru joqI ivic qUM bolih ivxu joqI koeI ikCu kirhu idKw isAwxIAY ] (138-15)
jichar tayree jot tichar jotee vich tooN boleh vin jotee ko-ee kichh karihu dikhaa si-aanee-ai.
As long as Your Light is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? Show me any such cleverness!

nwnk gurmuiK ndrI AwieAw hir ieko suGVu sujwxIAY ]2] (138-15)
naanak gurmukh nadree aa-i-aa har iko sugharh sujaanee-ai. ||2||
O Nanak, the Lord alone is Perfect and All-knowing; He is revealed to the Gurmukh. ||2||

pa-orhee.
Pauree:

quDu Awpy jgqu aupwie kY quDu Awpy DMDY lwieAw ] (138-16)
tuDh aapay jagat upaa-ay kai tuDh aapay DhanDhai laa-i-aa.
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work.

moh TgaulI pwie kY quDu Awphu jgqu KuAwieAw ] (138-17)
moh thag-ulee paa-ay kai tuDh aaphu jagat khu-aa-i-aa.
Administering the drug of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray.

iqsnw AMdir Agin hY nh iqpqY BuKw iqhwieAw ] (138-17)
tisnaa andar agan hai nah tiptai bhukhaa tihaa-i-aa.
The fire of desire is deep within; unsatisfied, people remain hungry and thirsty.

shsw iehu sMswru hY mir jMmY AwieAw jwieAw ] (138-18)
sahsaa ih sansaar hai mar jammai aa-i-aa jaa-i-aa.
This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation.

ibnu siqgur mohu n quteI siB Qky krm kmwieAw ] (138-18)
bin satgur moh na tut-ee sabh thakay karam kamaa-i-aa.
Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.

gurmqI nwmu iDAweIAY suiK rjw jw quDu BwieAw ] (138-19)
gurmatee naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sukh rajaa jaa tuDh bhaa-i-aa.
Those who follow the Guru's Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will.

kulu auDwry Awpxw DMnu jxydI mwieAw ] (138-19)
kul uDhaaray aapnaa Dhan janaydee maa-i-aa.
They save their families and ancestors; blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them.
