ਘਰਿ ਰਹੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੁਗਧ ਇਆਨੇ ॥ घरि रहु रे मन मुगध इआने ॥ Gʰar rahu ré man mugaḋʰ i▫aané. Remain in your own home, O my foolish and ignorant mind. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥ रामु जपहु अंतरगति धिआने ॥ Raam japahu anṫargaṫ ḋʰi▫aané. Meditate on the Lord - concentrate deep within your being and meditate on Him. ਲਾਲਚ ਛੋਡਿ ਰਚਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਇਉ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ लालच छोडि रचहु अपर्मपरि इउ पावहु मुकति दुआरा हे ॥१॥ Laalach chʰod rachahu aprampar i▫o paavhu mukaṫ ḋu▫aaraa hé. ||1|| Renounce your greed, and merge with the infinite Lord. In this way, you shall find the door of liberation. ||1|| ਜਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਣਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ जिसु बिसरिऐ जमु जोहणि लागै ॥ Jis bisri▫æ jam johaṇ laagæ. If you forget Him, the Messenger of Death will catch sight of you. ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਗੈ ॥ सभि सुख जाहि दुखा फुनि आगै ॥ Sabʰ sukʰ jaahi ḋukʰaa fun aagæ. All peace will be gone, and you will suffer with pain in the world hereafter. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ राम नामु जपि गुरमुखि जीअड़े एहु परम ततु वीचारा हे ॥२॥ Raam naam jap gurmukʰ jee▫aṛé éhu param ṫaṫ veechaaraa hé. ||2|| Chant the Name of the Lord as Gurmukh, O my soul; this is the supreme essence of contemplation. ||2|| ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥ हरि हरि नामु जपहु रसु मीठा ॥ Har har naam japahu ras meetʰaa. Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, the sweetest essence. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥ गुरमुखि हरि रसु अंतरि डीठा ॥ Gurmukʰ har ras anṫar deetʰaa. As Gurmukh, see the essence of the Lord deep within. ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਏਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ अहिनिसि राम रहहु रंगि राते एहु जपु तपु संजमु सारा हे ॥३॥ Ahinis raam rahhu rang raaṫé éhu jap ṫap sanjam saaraa hé. ||3|| Day and night, remain imbued with the Lord’s Love. This is the essence of all chanting, deep meditation and self-discipline. ||3|| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬੋਲਹੁ ॥ राम नामु गुर बचनी बोलहु ॥ Raam naam gur bachnee bolhu. Speak the Guru’s Word, and the Name of the Lord. ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਟੋਲਹੁ ॥ संत सभा महि इहु रसु टोलहु ॥ Sanṫ sabʰaa mėh ih ras tolahu. In the Society of the Saints, search for this essence. ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ॥ सचु तीरथि नावहु हरि गुण गावहु ॥ Sach ṫiraṫʰ naavhu har guṇ gaavhu. Bathe at the sacred shrine of Truth, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ गुरमति खोजि लहहु घरु अपना बहुड़ि न गरभ मझारा हे ॥४॥ Gurmaṫ kʰoj lahhu gʰar apnaa bahuṛ na garabʰ majʰaaraa hé. ||4|| Follow the Guru’s Teachings - seek and find the home of your own self, and you shall never be consigned to the womb of reincarnation again. ||4|| ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹੁ ॥ ततु वीचारहु हरि लिव लावहु ॥ Ṫaṫ veechaarahu har liv laavhu. Reflect upon the essence of reality, and lovingly focus your consciousness on the Lord. ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ अंत कालि जमु जोहि न साकै हरि बोलहु रामु पिआरा हे ॥५॥ Anṫ kaal jam johi na saakæ har bolhu raam pi▫aaraa hé. ||5|| At the very last moment, the Messenger of Death will not be able to touch you, if you chant the Name of the Beloved Lord. ||5|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ॥ सतिगुरु पुरखु दाता वड दाणा ॥ Saṫgur purakʰ ḋaaṫaa vad ḋaaṇaa. The True Guru, the Primal Being, the Great Giver, is all-knowing. ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ जिसु अंतरि साचु सु सबदि समाणा ॥ Jis anṫar saach so sabaḋ samaaṇaa. Whoever has Truth within himself, merges in the Word of the Shabad. ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ जिस कउ सतिगुरु मेलि मिलाए तिसु चूका जम भै भारा हे ॥६॥ Jis ka▫o saṫgur mél milaa▫é ṫis chookaa jam bʰæ bʰaaraa hé. ||6|| One whom the True Guru unites in Union, is rid of the overpowering fear of death. ||6|| ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨੀ ॥ पंच ततु मिलि काइआ कीनी ॥ Panch ṫaṫ mil kaa▫i▫aa keenee. The body is formed from the union of the five elements. ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਲੈ ਚੀਨੀ ॥ तिस महि राम रतनु लै चीनी ॥ Ṫis mėh raam raṫan læ cheenee. Know that the Lord’s jewel is within it. ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ आतम रामु रामु है आतम हरि पाईऐ सबदि वीचारा हे ॥७॥ Aaṫam raam raam hæ aaṫam har paa▫ee▫æ sabaḋ veechaaraa hé. ||7|| The soul is the Lord, and the Lord is the soul; contemplating the Shabad, the Lord is found. ||7|| ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ खिमा गहहु सतिगुर सरणाई ॥ Kʰimaa gahhu saṫgur sarṇaa▫ee. Hold tight to compassion and the Sanctuary of the True Guru. ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ सत संतोखि रहहु जन भाई ॥ Saṫ sanṫokʰ rahhu jan bʰaa▫ee. Abide in truth and contentment, O humble Siblings of Destiny. ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ आतमु चीनि परातमु चीनहु गुर संगति इहु निसतारा हे ॥८॥ Aaṫam cheen paraaṫam cheenahu gur sangaṫ ih nisṫaaraa hé. ||8|| Know your soul, and know the Supreme Soul; associating with the Guru, you shall be emancipated. ||8|| ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਪਟ ਮਹਿ ਟੇਕਾ ॥ साकत कूड़ कपट महि टेका ॥ Saakaṫ kooṛ kapat mėh tékaa. The faithless cynics are stuck in falsehood and deceit. ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥ अहिनिसि निंदा करहि अनेका ॥ Ahinis ninḋaa karahi anékaa. Day and night, they slander many others. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਨਰਕ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ बिनु सिमरन आवहि फुनि जावहि ग्रभ जोनी नरक मझारा हे ॥९॥ Bin simran aavahi fun jaavėh garabʰ jonee narak majʰaaraa hé. ||9|| Without meditative remembrance, they come and then go, and are cast into the hellish womb of reincarnation. ||9|| ਸਾਕਤ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ॥ साकत जम की काणि न चूकै ॥ Saakaṫ jam kee kaaṇ na chookæ. The faithless cynic is not rid of his fear of death. ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਮੂਕੈ ॥ जम का डंडु न कबहू मूकै ॥ Jam kaa dand na kabhoo mookæ. The Messenger of Death’s club is never taken away. ਬਾਕੀ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ बाकी धरम राइ की लीजै सिरि अफरिओ भारु अफारा हे ॥१०॥ Baakee ḋʰaram raa▫é kee leejæ sir afri▫o bʰaar afaaraa hé. ||10|| He has to answer to the Righteous Judge of Dharma for the account of his actions; the egotistical being carries the unbearable load. ||10|| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ बिनु गुर पारु न पावै कोई हरि जपीऐ पारि उतारा हे ॥११॥ Bin gur paar na paavæ ko▫ee har japee▫æ paar uṫaaraa hé. ||11|| Without the Guru, no one is saved; meditating on the Lord, they are carried across to the other side. ||11|| ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥ हउमै करता भवजलि परिआ ॥ Ha▫umæ karṫaa bʰavjal pari▫aa. Acting egotistically, he falls into the terrifying world-ocean. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥ बिनु गुर साकतु कहहु को तरिआ ॥ Bin gur saakaṫ kahhu ko ṫari▫aa. Tell me: without the Guru, what faithless cynic has been saved? ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ गुर की दाति न मेटै कोई ॥ Gur kee ḋaaṫ na métæ ko▫ee. No one can erase the Guru’s blessings. ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥ जिसु बखसे तिसु तारे सोई ॥ Jis bakʰsé ṫis ṫaaré so▫ee. The Lord carries across those whom He forgives. ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ जनम मरण दुखु नेड़ि न आवै मनि सो प्रभु अपर अपारा हे ॥१२॥ Janam maraṇ ḋukʰ néṛ na aavæ man so parabʰ apar apaaraa hé. ||12|| The pains of birth and death do not even approach those whose minds are filled with God, the infinite and endless. ||12|| ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥ गुर ते भूले आवहु जावहु ॥ Gur ṫé bʰoolé aavhu jaavhu. Those who forget the Guru come and go in reincarnation. ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ जनमि मरहु फुनि पाप कमावहु ॥ Janam marahu fun paap kamaavahu. They are born, only to die again, and continue committing sins. ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂੜ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ साकत मूड़ अचेत न चेतहि दुखु लागै ता रामु पुकारा हे ॥१३॥ Saakaṫ mooṛ achéṫ na cheeṫėh ḋukʰ laagæ ṫaa raam pukaaraa hé. ||13|| The unconscious, foolish, faithless cynic does not remember the Lord; but when he is stricken with pain, then he cries out for the Lord. ||13|| ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ॥ सुखु दुखु पुरब जनम के कीए ॥ Sukʰ ḋukʰ purab janam ké kee▫é. Pleasure and pain are the consequences of the actions of past lives. ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਦੀਏ ॥ सो जाणै जिनि दातै दीए ॥ So jaaṇæ jin ḋaaṫæ ḋee▫é. The Giver, who blesses us with these - He alone knows. ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ किस कउ दोसु देहि तू प्राणी सहु अपणा कीआ करारा हे ॥१४॥ Kis ka▫o ḋos ḋėh ṫoo paraaṇee saho apṇaa kee▫aa karaaraa hé. ||14|| So, who can you blame, O mortal being? The hardships you suffer are from your own actions. ||14|| ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ आसा मनसा बंधि चलाइआ ॥ Aasaa mansaa banḋʰ chalaa▫i▫aa. Hope and desire bind you and lead you on. ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥ हउमै ममता करदा आइआ ॥ Ha▫umæ mamṫaa karḋaa aa▫i▫aa. Practicing egotism and possessiveness, you have come into the world. ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਚਾਲੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੇ ਛਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ मेरी मेरी करत किआ ले चाले बिखु लादे छार बिकारा हे ॥१५॥ Méree méree karaṫ ki▫aa lé chaalé bikʰ laaḋé chʰaar bikaaraa hé. ||15|| Indulging in egotism and self-conceit, what will you be able to carry with you, except the load of ashes from poison and corruption? ||15|| ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ हरि की भगति करहु जन भाई ॥ Har kee bʰagaṫ karahu jan bʰaa▫ee. Worship the Lord in devotion, O humble Siblings of Destiny. ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ अकथु कथहु मनु मनहि समाई ॥ Akaṫʰ kaṫʰahu man manėh samaa▫ee. Speak the Unspoken Speech, and the mind will merge back into the Mind. ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੇ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥ उठि चलता ठाकि रखहु घरि अपुनै दुखु काटे काटणहारा हे ॥१६॥ Utʰ chalṫaa tʰaak rakʰahu gʰar apunæ ḋukʰ kaaté kaataṇhaaraa hé. ||16|| Restrain your restless mind within its own home, and the Lord, the Destroyer, shall destroy your pain. ||16|| ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਪਰਾਤੀ ॥ हरि गुर पूरे की ओट पराती ॥ Har gur pooré kee ot paraaṫee. I seek the support of the Perfect Guru, the Lord. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥ गुरमुखि हरि लिव गुरमुखि जाती ॥ Gurmukʰ har liv gurmukʰ jaaṫee. The Gurmukh loves the Lord; the Gurmukh realizes the Lord. ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੪॥੧੦॥ नानक राम नामि मति ऊतम हरि बखसे पारि उतारा हे ॥१७॥४॥१०॥ Naanak raam naam maṫ ooṫam har bakʰsé paar uṫaaraa hé. ||17||4||10|| O Nanak! Through the Lord’s Name, the intellect is exalted; granting His forgiveness, the Lord carries him across to the other side. ||17||4||10||
