ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਰਹਰੁ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥ कामु क्रोधु परहरु पर निंदा ॥ Kaam kroḋʰ par▫har par ninḋaa. Leave behind sexual desire, anger and the slander of others. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਤਜਿ ਹੋਹੁ ਨਿਚਿੰਦਾ ॥ लबु लोभु तजि होहु निचिंदा ॥ Lab lobʰ ṫaj hohu nichinḋaa. Renounce greed and possessiveness, and become carefree. ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕਾ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ भ्रम का संगलु तोड़ि निराला हरि अंतरि हरि रसु पाइआ ॥१॥ Bʰaram kaa sangal ṫoṛ niraalaa har anṫar har ras paa▫i▫aa. ||1|| Break the chains of doubt, and remain unattached; you shall find the Lord, and the Lord’s sublime essence, deep within yourself.||1|| ਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਚਮਕਿ ਚੰਦਾਇਣੁ ਦੇਖੈ ॥ निसि दामनि जिउ चमकि चंदाइणु देखै ॥ Nis ḋaaman ji▫o chamak chanḋaa▫iṇ ḋékʰæ. As one sees the flash of lightning in the night, ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪੇਖੈ ॥ अहिनिसि जोति निरंतरि पेखै ॥ Ahinis joṫ niranṫar pékʰæ. see the Divine Light deep within your nucleus, day and night. ਆਨੰਦ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਸਰੂਪਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੇਖਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ आनंद रूपु अनूपु सरूपा गुरि पूरै देखाइआ ॥२॥ Aananḋ roop anoop saroopaa gur pooræ ḋékʰaa▫i▫aa. ||2|| The Lord, the embodiment of bliss, incomparably beautiful, reveals the Perfect Guru. ||2|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥ सतिगुर मिलहु आपे प्रभु तारे ॥ Saṫgur milhu aapé parabʰ ṫaaré. So, meet with the True Guru, and God Himself will save you. ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥ ससि घरि सूरु दीपकु गैणारे ॥ Sas gʰar soor ḋeepak gæṇaaré. He placed the lamps of the sun and the moon in the home of the sky. ਦੇਖਿ ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਭੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ देखि अदिसटु रहहु लिव लागी सभु त्रिभवणि ब्रहमु सबाइआ ॥३॥ Ḋékʰ aḋisat rahhu liv laagee sabʰ ṫaribʰavaṇ barahm sabaa▫i▫aa. ||3|| See the invisible Lord, and remain absorbed in loving devotion. God is all throughout the three worlds.||3|| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭਉ ਜਾਏ ॥ अमृत रसु पाए त्रिसना भउ जाए ॥ Amriṫ ras paa▫é ṫarisnaa bʰa▫o jaa▫é. Obtaining the sublime ambrosial essence, desire and fear are dispelled. ਅਨਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ अनभउ पदु पावै आपु गवाए ॥ Anbʰa▫o paḋ paavæ aap gavaa▫é. The state of inspired illumination is obtained, and self-conceit is eradicated. ਊਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ ऊची पदवी ऊचो ऊचा निरमल सबदु कमाइआ ॥४॥ Oochee paḋvee oocho oochaa nirmal sabaḋ kamaa▫i▫aa. ||4|| The lofty and exalted state, the highest of the high is obtained, practicing the immaculate Word of the Shabad. ||4|| ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ अद्रिसट अगोचरु नामु अपारा ॥ Aḋrist agochar naam apaaraa. The Naam, the Name of the invisible and unfathomable Lord, is infinite. ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ नानक कउ जुगि जुगि हरि जसु दीजै हरि जपीऐ अंतु न पाइआ ॥५॥ Naanak ka▫o jug jug har jas ḋeejæ har japee▫æ anṫ na paa▫i▫aa. ||5|| O Lord, please bless Nanak with Your Praise in each and every age; meditating on the Lord, I cannot find His limits.||5|| ਅਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ अति रसु मीठा नामु पिआरा ॥ Aṫ ras meetʰaa naam pi▫aaraa. The sublime essence of the Beloved Naam is utterly sweet. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੀਰਾ ॥ अंतरि नामु परापति हीरा ॥ Anṫar naam paraapaṫ heeraa. With the Naam deep within the nucleus of the self, the jewel is obtained. ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਧੀਰਾ ॥ हरि जपते मनु मन ते धीरा ॥ Har japṫé man man ṫé ḋʰeeraa. Meditating on the Lord, the mind is comforted and consoled by the mind itself. ਦੁਘਟ ਘਟ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੬॥ दुघट घट भउ भंजनु पाईऐ बाहुड़ि जनमि न जाइआ ॥६॥ Ḋugʰat gʰat bʰa▫o bʰanjan paa▫ee▫æ baahuṛ janam na jaa▫i▫aa. ||6|| On that most difficult path, the Destroyer of fear is found, and one does not have to enter the womb of reincarnation again. ||6|| ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥ भगति हेति गुर सबदि तरंगा ॥ Bʰagaṫ héṫ gur sabaḋ ṫarangaa. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, inspiration for the loving devotional worship wells up. ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੰਗਾ ॥ हरि जसु नामु पदारथु मंगा ॥ Har jas naam paḋaaraṫʰ mangaa. I beg for the treasure of the Naam, and the Lord’s Praise. ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ हरि भावै गुर मेलि मिलाए हरि तारे जगतु सबाइआ ॥७॥ Har bʰaavæ gur mél milaa▫é har ṫaaré jagaṫ sabaa▫i▫aa. ||7|| When it pleases the Lord, He unites me in Union with the Guru; the Lord saves the whole world.||7|| ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਵਾ ਕੇ ॥ जिनि जपु जपिओ सतिगुर मति वा के ॥ Jin jap japi▫o saṫgur maṫ vaa ké. One who chants the Lord’s Chant, attains the Wisdom of the True Guru. ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਗ ਤਾ ਕੇ ॥ जमकंकर कालु सेवक पग ता के ॥ Jamkankar kaal sévak pag ṫaa ké. The tyrant, the Messenger of Death, becomes a servant at his feet. ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਜਗੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ ऊतम संगति गति मिति ऊतम जगु भउजलु पारि तराइआ ॥८॥ Ooṫam sangaṫ gaṫ miṫ ooṫam jag bʰa▫ojal paar ṫaraa▫i▫aa. ||8|| In the noble congregation of the Sangat, one’s state and way of life become noble as well, and one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||8|| ਇਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਰੀਐ ॥ इहु भवजलु जगतु सबदि गुर तरीऐ ॥ Ih bʰavjal jagaṫ sabaḋ gur ṫaree▫æ. Through the Shabad, one crosses over this terrifying world-ocean. ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਰੀਐ ॥ अंतर की दुबिधा अंतरि जरीऐ ॥ Anṫar kee ḋubiḋʰaa anṫar jaree▫æ. The duality within is burnt away from within. ਪੰਚ ਬਾਣ ਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਉ ਮਾਰੈ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਧਣਖੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥੯॥ पंच बाण ले जम कउ मारै गगनंतरि धणखु चड़ाइआ ॥९॥ Panch baaṇ lé jam ka▫o maaræ gagnanṫar ḋʰaṇakʰ chaṛaa▫i▫aa. ||9|| Taking up the five arrows of virtue, Death is killed, drawing the Bow of the Tenth Gate in the Mind’s Sky. ||9|| ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ सबद सुरति बिनु आईऐ जाईऐ ॥ Sabaḋ suraṫ bin aa▫ee▫æ jaa▫ee▫æ. Without awareness of the Shabad, they come and go in reincarnation. ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰਿ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ साकत नरि सबद सुरति किउ पाईऐ ॥ Saakaṫ nar sabaḋ suraṫ ki▫o paa▫ee▫æ. How can the faithless cynics attain enlightened awareness of the Shabad? ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥ नानक गुरमुखि मुकति पराइणु हरि पूरै भागि मिलाइआ ॥१०॥ Naanak gurmukʰ mukaṫ paraa▫iṇ har pooræ bʰaag milaa▫i▫aa. ||10|| O Nanak! The Gurmukh obtains the support of liberation; by perfect destiny, he meets the Lord. ||10|| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥ निरभउ सतिगुरु है रखवाला ॥ Nirbʰa▫o saṫgur hæ rakʰvaalaa. The Fearless True Guru is our Savior and Protector. ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ भगति परापति गुर गोपाला ॥ Bʰagaṫ paraapaṫ gur gopaalaa. Devotional worship is obtained through the Guru, the Lord of the world. ਧੁਨਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥ धुनि अनंद अनाहदु वाजै गुर सबदि निरंजनु पाइआ ॥११॥ Ḋʰun anand anaahaḋ vaajæ gur sabaḋ niranjan paa▫i▫aa. ||11|| The blissful music of the unstruck sound current vibrates and resounds; through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is obtained. ||11|| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ॥ निरभउ सो सिरि नाही लेखा ॥ Nirbʰa▫o so sir naahee lékʰaa. He alone is fearless, who has no destiny written on His head. ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੇਖਾ ॥ आपि अलेखु कुदरति है देखा ॥ Aap alékʰ kuḋraṫ hæ ḋékʰaa. God Himself is unseen; He reveals Himself through His wondrous creative power. ਆਪਿ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥ आपि अतीतु अजोनी स्मभउ नानक गुरमति सो पाइआ ॥१२॥ Aap aṫeeṫ ajonee sambʰa▫o Naanak gurmaṫ so paa▫i▫aa. ||12|| He Himself is unattached, unborn and self-existent. O Nanak! Through the Guru’s Teachings, He is found. ||12|| ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ अंतर की गति सतिगुरु जाणै ॥ Anṫar kee gaṫ saṫgur jaaṇæ. The True Guru knows the state of one’s inner being. ਸੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ सो निरभउ गुर सबदि पछाणै ॥ So nirbʰa▫o gur sabaḋ pachʰaaṇæ. He alone is fearless, who realizes the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਅੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥ अंतरु देखि निरंतरि बूझै अनत न मनु डोलाइआ ॥१३॥ Anṫar ḋékʰ niranṫar boojʰæ anaṫ na man dolaa▫i▫aa. ||13|| He looks within his own inner being, and realizes the Lord within us all; his mind does not waver at all. ||13|| ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੋ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥ निरभउ सो अभ अंतरि वसिआ ॥ Nirbʰa▫o so abʰ anṫar vasi▫aa. He alone is fearless, within whose being the Lord abides. ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਸਿਆ ॥ अहिनिसि नामि निरंजन रसिआ ॥ Ahinis naam niranjan rasi▫aa. Day and night, he is delighted with the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥ नानक हरि जसु संगति पाईऐ हरि सहजे सहजि मिलाइआ ॥१४॥ Naanak har jas sangaṫ paa▫ee▫æ har sėhjé sahj milaa▫i▫aa. ||14|| O Nanak! In the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, the Lord’s Praise is obtained, and one easily, intuitively meets the Lord. ||14|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ अंतरि बाहरि सो प्रभु जाणै ॥ Anṫar baahar so parabʰ jaaṇæ. One who knows God, within the self and beyond, ਊਪਰਿ ਆਦਿ ਸਰਬ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੪॥੨੧॥ ऊपरि आदि सरब तिहु लोई सचु नानक अमृत रसु पाइआ ॥१५॥४॥२१॥ Oopar aaḋ sarab ṫihu lo▫ee sach Naanak amriṫ ras paa▫i▫aa. ||15||4||21|| The True Primal Lord is over all the three worlds; O Nanak! His Ambrosial Nectar is obtained. ||15||4||21|| ਰਹੈ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਚਲਤੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥ रहै अलिपतु चलते घरि आणै ॥ Rahæ alipaṫ chalṫé gʰar aaṇæ. remains detached, and brings his wandering mind back to its home.
