ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਕੀਓ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥ जुग छतीह कीओ गुबारा ॥ Jug chʰaṫeeh kee▫o gubaaraa. For thirty-six ages, utter darkness prevailed. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ मारू महला ३ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 3. Maaroo, Third Mehl: ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ तू आपे जाणहि सिरजणहारा ॥ Ṫoo aapé jaaṇėh sirjaṇhaaraa. Only You Yourself know this, O Creator Lord. ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ होर किआ को कहै कि आखि वखाणै तू आपे कीमति पाइदा ॥१॥ Hor ki▫aa ko kahæ kė aakʰ vakʰaaṇæ ṫoo aapé keemaṫ paa▫iḋaa. ||1|| What can anyone else say? What can anyone explain? Only You Yourself can estimate Your worth. ||1|| ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥ ओअंकारि सभ स्रिसटि उपाई ॥ O▫ankaar sabʰ sarisat upaa▫ee. The One Universal Creator created the entire Universe. ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ सभु खेलु तमासा तेरी वडिआई ॥ Sabʰ kʰél ṫamaasaa ṫéree vadi▫aa▫ee. All the plays and dramas are to Your glory and greatness. ਆਪੇ ਵੇਕ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ आपे वेक करे सभि साचा आपे भंनि घड़ाइदा ॥२॥ Aapé vék karé sabʰ saachaa aapé bʰann gʰaṛaa▫iḋaa. ||2|| The True Lord Himself makes all distinctions; He Himself breaks and builds. ||2|| ਬਾਜੀਗਰਿ ਇਕ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ बाजीगरि इक बाजी पाई ॥ Baajeegar ik baajee paa▫ee. The Juggler has staged His juggling show. ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈ ॥ पूरे गुर ते नदरी आई ॥ Pooré gur ṫé naḋree aa▫ee. Through the Perfect Guru, one comes to behold it. ਸਦਾ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ सदा अलिपतु रहै गुर सबदी साचे सिउ चितु लाइदा ॥३॥ Saḋaa alipaṫ rahæ gur sabḋee saaché si▫o chiṫ laa▫iḋaa. ||3|| One who remains forever detached in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad - his consciousness is attuned to the True Lord. ||3|| ਬਾਜਹਿ ਬਾਜੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥ बाजहि बाजे धुनि आकारा ॥ Baajėh baajé ḋʰun aakaaraa. The musical instruments of the body vibrate and resound. ਆਪਿ ਵਜਾਏ ਵਜਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ आपि वजाए वजावणहारा ॥ Aap vajaa▫é vajaavaṇhaaraa. The Player Himself plays them. ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪਉਣੁ ਵਹੈ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਵਣੈ ਸਭ ਵਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ घटि घटि पउणु वहै इक रंगी मिलि पवणै सभ वजाइदा ॥४॥ Gʰat gʰat pa▫uṇ vahæ ik rangee mil pavṇæ sabʰ vajaa▫iḋaa. ||4|| The breath flows equally through the hearts of each and every being. Receiving the breath, all the instruments sing. ||4|| ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ करता करे सु निहचउ होवै ॥ Karṫaa karé so nihcha▫o hovæ. Whatever the Creator does, surely comes to pass. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ गुर कै सबदे हउमै खोवै ॥ Gur kæ sabḋé ha▫umæ kʰovæ. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, egotism is consumed. ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ गुर परसादी किसै दे वडिआई नामो नामु धिआइदा ॥५॥ Gur parsaadee kisæ ḋé vadi▫aa▫ee naamo naam ḋʰi▫aa▫iḋaa. ||5|| By Guru’s Grace, some are blessed with glorious greatness; they meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||5|| ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥ नामु मंनि वसै नामो सालाही ॥ Naam man vasæ naamo saalaahee. The Naam abides within my mind, and I praise the Naam. ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ गुर सेवे जेवडु होरु लाहा नाही ॥ Gur sévé jévad hor laahaa naahee. There is no other profit as great as service to the Guru. ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਮੋ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ नामो नामु सदा सुखदाता नामो लाहा पाइदा ॥६॥ Naamo naam saḋaa sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa naamo laahaa paa▫iḋaa. ||6|| The Naam is forever the Giver of peace. Through the Naam we earn the (real) profit. ||6|| ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ बिनु नावै सभ दुखु संसारा ॥ Bin naavæ sabʰ ḋukʰ sansaaraa. Without the Name, all the world suffers in misery. ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥ बहु करम कमावहि वधहि विकारा ॥ Baho karam kamaavėh vaḋʰėh vikaaraa. The more actions one does, the more the corruption increases. ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ नामु न सेवहि किउ सुखु पाईऐ बिनु नावै दुखु पाइदा ॥७॥ Naam na sévėh ki▫o sukʰ paa▫ee▫æ bin naavæ ḋukʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||7|| Without serving the Naam, how can anyone find peace? Without the Naam, one suffers in pain. ||7|| ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ आपि करे तै आपि कराए ॥ Aap karé ṫæ aap karaa▫é. He Himself acts, and inspires all to act. ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥ गुर परसादी किसै बुझाए ॥ Gur parsaadee kisæ bujʰaa▫é. By Guru’s Grace, He reveals Himself to a few. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜਹਿ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ गुरमुखि होवहि से बंधन तोड़हि मुकती कै घरि पाइदा ॥८॥ Gurmukʰ hovėh sé banḋʰan ṫoṛėh mukṫee kæ gʰar paa▫iḋaa. ||8|| One who becomes Gurmukh breaks his bonds, and attains the home of liberation. ||8|| ਗਣਤ ਗਣੈ ਸੋ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ गणत गणै सो जलै संसारा ॥ Gaṇaṫ gaṇæ so jalæ sansaaraa. One who calculates his accounts, burns in the world. ਸਹਸਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਚੁਕੈ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥ सहसा मूलि न चुकै विकारा ॥ Sahsaa mool na chukæ vikaaraa. His skepticism and corruption are never dispelled. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਗਣਤ ਚੁਕਾਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ गुरमुखि होवै सु गणत चुकाए सचे सचि समाइदा ॥९॥ Gurmukʰ hovæ so gaṇaṫ chukaa▫é saché sach samaa▫iḋaa. ||9|| One who becomes Gurmukh abandons his calculations; through Truth, we merge in the True Lord. ||9|| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ गुर परसादी परगटु होई ॥ Gur parsaadee pargat ho▫ee. By Guru’s Grace, it is revealed. ਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਈ ॥ जे सचु देइ त पाए कोई ॥ Jé sach ḋé▫é ṫa paa▫é ko▫ee. If God grants Truth, then we may attain it. ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ सचु नामु सालाहे रंगि राता गुर किरपा ते सुखु पाइदा ॥१०॥ Sach naam saalaahé rang raaṫaa gur kirpaa ṫé sukʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||10|| One who praises the True Name, and remains imbued with the Lord’s Love, by Guru’s Grace, finds peace. ||10|| ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ जपु तपु संजमु नामु पिआरा ॥ Jap ṫap sanjam naam pi▫aaraa. The Beloved Naam, the Name of the Lord, is chanting, meditation, penance and self-control. ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ किलविख काटे काटणहारा ॥ Kilvikʰ kaaté kaataṇhaaraa. God, the Destroyer, destroys sins. ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ हरि कै नामि तनु मनु सीतलु होआ सहजे सहजि समाइदा ॥११॥ Har kæ naam ṫan man seeṫal ho▫aa sėhjé sahj samaa▫iḋaa. ||11|| Through the Name of the Lord, the body and mind are cooled and soothed, and one is intuitively, easily absorbed into the Celestial Lord. ||11|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ अंतरि लोभु मनि मैलै मलु लाए ॥ Anṫar lobʰ man mælæ mal laa▫é. With greed within them, their minds are filthy, and they spread filth around. ਮੈਲੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ मैले करम करे दुखु पाए ॥ Mælé karam karé ḋukʰ paa▫é. They do filthy deeds, and suffer with pain. ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ कूड़ो कूड़ु करे वापारा कूड़ु बोलि दुखु पाइदा ॥१२॥ Kooṛo kooṛ karé vaapaaraa kooṛ bol ḋukʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||12|| They deal in falsehood, and nothing but falsehood; telling lies, they suffer with pain. ||12|| ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ निरमल बाणी को मंनि वसाए ॥ Nirmal baṇee ko man vasaa▫é. Rare is that person who enshrines the Immaculate Bani of the Guru’s Word within his mind. ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਜਾਏ ॥ गुर परसादी सहसा जाए ॥ Gur parsaadee sahsaa jaa▫é. By Guru’s Grace, his skepticism is removed. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ गुर कै भाणै चलै दिनु राती नामु चेति सुखु पाइदा ॥१३॥ Gur kæ bʰaaṇæ chalæ ḋin raaṫee naam chéṫ sukʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||13|| He walks in harmony with the Guru’s Will, day and night; remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he finds peace. ||13|| ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ आपि सिरंदा सचा सोई ॥ Aap siranḋaa sachaa so▫ee. The True Lord Himself is the Creator. ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਖਪਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥ आपि उपाइ खपाए सोई ॥ Aap upaa▫é kʰapaa▫é so▫ee. He Himself creates and destroys. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ गुरमुखि होवै सु सदा सलाहे मिलि साचे सुखु पाइदा ॥१४॥ Gurmukʰ hovæ so saḋaa salaahé mil saaché sukʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||14|| One who becomes Gurmukh, praises the Lord forever. Meeting the True Lord, he finds peace. ||14|| ਕਾਮਿ ਕਰੋਧਿ ਜਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ कामि करोधि जलै सभु कोई ॥ Kaam karoḋʰ jalæ sabʰ ko▫ee. Everyone is burning in the fires of sexuality and anger. ਅਨੇਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ अनेक जतन करे इंद्री वसि न होई ॥ Anék jaṫan karé inḋree vas na ho▫ee. Making countless efforts, sexual desire is not overcome. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਆਵੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਰੇ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ सतिगुर सेवे मनु वसि आवै मन मारे मनहि समाइदा ॥१५॥ Saṫgur sévé man vas aavæ man maaré manėh samaa▫iḋaa. ||15|| Serving the True Guru, one brings his mind under control; conquering his mind, he merges in the Mind of God. ||15|| ਮੇਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਆ ॥ मेरा तेरा तुधु आपे कीआ ॥ Méraa ṫéraa ṫuḋʰ aapé kee▫aa. You Yourself created the sense of ’mine’ and ’yours.’ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਜੀਆ ॥ सभि तेरे जंत तेरे सभि जीआ ॥ Sabʰ ṫéré janṫ ṫéré sabʰ jee▫aa. All creatures are Yours; You created all beings. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਸਦਾ ਤੂ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੪॥੧੮॥ नानक नामु समालि सदा तू गुरमती मंनि वसाइदा ॥१६॥४॥१८॥ Naanak naam samaal saḋaa ṫoo gurmaṫee man vasaa▫iḋaa. ||16||4||18|| O Nanak! Contemplate the Naam forever; through the Guru’s Teachings, the Lord abides in the mind. ||16||4||18||
