ਜਗਨ ਹੋਮ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਿਤ ਦੂਖ ਸਹੈ ॥ जगन होम पुंन तप पूजा देह दुखी नित दूख सहै ॥ Jagan hom punn ṫap poojaa ḋéh ḋukʰee niṫ ḋookʰ sahæ. You may give feasts, make burnt offerings, donate to charity, perform austere penance and worship, and endure pain and suffering in the body. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ राम नाम बिनु मुकति न पावसि मुकति नामि गुरमुखि लहै ॥१॥ Raam naam bin mukaṫ na paavas mukaṫ naam gurmukʰ lahæ. ||1|| But without the Lord’s Name, liberation is not obtained. As Gurmukh, obtain the Naam and liberation. ||1|| ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ भैरउ महला १ ॥ Bʰæro mėhlaa 1. Bhairao, First Mehl: ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਾ ॥ राम नाम बिनु बिरथे जगि जनमा ॥ Raam naam bin birṫʰé jag janmaa. Without the Lord’s Name, birth into the world is useless. ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਮਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ बिखु खावै बिखु बोली बोलै बिनु नावै निहफलु मरि भ्रमना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bikʰ kʰaavæ bikʰ bolee bolæ bin naavæ nihfal mar bʰarmanaa. ||1|| rahaa▫o. Without the Name, the mortal eats poison and speaks poisonous words; he dies fruitlessly, and wanders in reincarnation. ||1||Pause|| ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪਾਠ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਕਾਲ ਕਰੈ ॥ पुसतक पाठ बिआकरण वखाणै संधिआ करम तिकाल करै ॥ Pusṫak paatʰ bi▫aakaraṇ vakʰaaṇæ sanḋʰi▫aa karam ṫikaal karæ. The mortal may read scriptures, study grammar and say his prayers three times a day. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੨॥ बिनु गुर सबद मुकति कहा प्राणी राम नाम बिनु उरझि मरै ॥२॥ Bin gur sabaḋ mukaṫ kahaa paraaṇee raam naam bin urajʰ maræ. ||2|| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, where is liberation, O mortal? Without the Lord’s Name, the mortal is entangled and dies. ||2|| ਡੰਡ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨੁ ਕਰੈ ॥ डंड कमंडल सिखा सूतु धोती तीरथि गवनु अति भ्रमनु करै ॥ Dand kamandal sikʰaa sooṫ ḋʰoṫee ṫiraṫʰ gavan aṫ bʰarman karæ. Walking sticks, begging bowls, hair tufts, sacred threads, loincloths, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and wandering all around- ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੩॥ राम नाम बिनु सांति न आवै जपि हरि हरि नामु सु पारि परै ॥३॥ Raam naam bin saaⁿṫ na aavæ jap har har naam so paar paræ. ||3|| without the Lord’s Name, peace and tranquility are not obtained. One who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, crosses over to the other side. ||3|| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਰਤ ਕੈ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਭੇਖੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥ राम नाम बिनु त्रिपति न आवै किरत कै बांधै भेखु भइआ ॥४॥ Raam naam bin ṫaripaṫ na aavæ kiraṫ kæ baaⁿḋʰæ bʰékʰ bʰa▫i▫aa. ||4|| But without the Lord’s Name, he is not satisfied; he wears religious robes, but he is bound by the karma of the actions he committed in past lives. ||4|| ਜਟਾ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ जटा मुकटु तनि भसम लगाई बसत्र छोडि तनि नगनु भइआ ॥ Jataa mukat ṫan bʰasam lagaa▫ee basṫar chʰod ṫan nagan bʰa▫i▫aa. The mortal’s hair may be matted and tangled upon his head, and he may smear his body with ashes; he may take off his clothes and go naked. ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥ जेते जीअ जंत जलि थलि महीअलि जत्र कत्र तू सरब जीआ ॥ Jéṫé jee▫a janṫ jal ṫʰal mahee▫al jaṫar kaṫar ṫoo sarab jee▫aa. As many beings and creatures as there are in the water, on the land and in the sky - wherever they are, You are with them all, O Lord. ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੋਲਿ ਪੀਆ ॥੫॥੭॥੮॥ गुर परसादि राखि ले जन कउ हरि रसु नानक झोलि पीआ ॥५॥७॥८॥ Gur parsaaḋ raakʰ lé jan ka▫o har ras Naanak jʰol pee▫aa. ||5||7||8|| By Guru’s Grace, please preserve Your humble servant; O Lord, Nanak stirs up this juice, and drinks it in. ||5||7||8||
