ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ भैरउ महला १ ॥ Bʰæro mėhlaa 1. Bhairao, First Mehl: ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਬ ਧਨੁ ਧਾਰਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ हिरदै नामु सरब धनु धारणु गुर परसादी पाईऐ ॥ Hirḋæ naam sarab ḋʰan ḋʰaaraṇ gur parsaadee paa▫ee▫æ. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the wealth and support of all; It is enshrined in the heart, by Guru’s Grace. ਅਮਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ अमर पदारथ ते किरतारथ सहज धिआनि लिव लाईऐ ॥१॥ Amar paḋaaraṫʰ ṫé kirṫaaraṫʰ sahj ḋʰi▫aan liv laa▫ee▫æ. ||1|| One who gathers this imperishable wealth is fulfilled, and through intuitive meditation, is lovingly focused on the Lord. ||1|| ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥ मन रे राम भगति चितु लाईऐ ॥ Man ré raam bʰagaṫ chiṫ laa▫ee▫æ. O mortal, focus your consciousness on devotional worship of the Lord. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ गुरमुखि राम नामु जपि हिरदै सहज सेती घरि जाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Gurmukʰ raam naam jap hirḋæ sahj séṫee gʰar jaa▫ee▫æ. ||1|| rahaa▫o. As Gurmukh, meditate on the Name of the Lord in your heart, and you shall return to your home with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause|| ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥ भरमु भेदु भउ कबहु न छूटसि आवत जात न जानी ॥ Bʰaram bʰéḋ bʰa▫o kabahu na chʰootas aavaṫ jaaṫ na jaanee. Doubt, separation and fear are never eradicated, and the mortal continues coming and going in reincarnation, as long as he does not know the Lord. ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ बिनु हरि नाम को मुकति न पावसि डूबि मुए बिनु पानी ॥२॥ Bin har naam ko mukaṫ na paavas doob mu▫é bin paanee. ||2|| Without the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated; they drown and die without water. ||2|| ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਸਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਸਿ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥ धंधा करत सगली पति खोवसि भरमु न मिटसि गवारा ॥ Ḋʰanḋʰaa karaṫ saglee paṫ kʰovas bʰaram na mitas gavaaraa. Busy with his worldly affairs, all honor is lost; the ignorant one is not rid of his doubts. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ बिनु गुर सबद मुकति नही कब ही अंधुले धंधु पसारा ॥३॥ Bin gur sabaḋ mukaṫ nahee kab hee anḋʰulé ḋʰanḋʰ pasaaraa. ||3|| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the mortal is never liberated; he remains blindly entangled in the expanse of worldly affairs. ||3|| ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥ अकुल निरंजन सिउ मनु मानिआ मन ही ते मनु मूआ ॥ Akul niranjan si▫o man maani▫aa man hee ṫé man moo▫aa. My mind is pleased and appeased with the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. Through the mind itself, the mind is subdued. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥ अंतरि बाहरि एको जानिआ नानक अवरु न दूआ ॥४॥६॥७॥ Anṫar baahar éko jaani▫aa Naanak avar na ḋoo▫aa. ||4||6||7|| Deep within my being, and outside as well, I know only the One Lord. O Nanak! There is no other at all. ||4||6||7|| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ राम नाम बिनु मुकति न पावसि मुकति नामि गुरमुखि लहै ॥१॥ Raam naam bin mukaṫ na paavas mukaṫ naam gurmukʰ lahæ. ||1|| But without the Lord’s Name, liberation is not obtained. As Gurmukh, obtain the Naam and liberation. ||1|| ਜਗਨ ਹੋਮ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਿਤ ਦੂਖ ਸਹੈ ॥ जगन होम पुंन तप पूजा देह दुखी नित दूख सहै ॥ Jagan hom punn ṫap poojaa ḋéh ḋukʰee niṫ ḋookʰ sahæ. You may give feasts, make burnt offerings, donate to charity, perform austere penance and worship, and endure pain and suffering in the body.
