ਜਾਗਤੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ जागतु जागि रहै गुर सेवा बिनु हरि मै को नाही ॥ Jaagaṫ jaag rahæ gur sévaa bin har mæ ko naahee. Remain awake and aware, serving the Guru; except for the Lord, no one is mine. ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मलार महला १ ॥ Malaar mėhlaa 1. Malaar, First Mehl: ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਚੁ ਕਾਚੁ ਢਰਿ ਪਾਂਹੀ ॥੧॥ अनिक जतन करि रहणु न पावै आचु काचु ढरि पांही ॥१॥ Anik jaṫan kar rahaṇ na paavæ aach kaach dʰar paaⁿhee. ||1|| Even by making all sorts of efforts, you shall not remain here; it shall melt like glass in the fire. ||1|| ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਧਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਹੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਕੈਸਾ ॥ इसु तन धन का कहहु गरबु कैसा ॥ Is ṫan ḋʰan kaa kahhu garab kæsaa. Tell me - why are you so proud of your body and wealth? ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਵਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਖਪੈ ਜਗੁ ਐਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ बिनसत बार न लागै बवरे हउमै गरबि खपै जगु ऐसा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Binsaṫ baar na laagæ bavré ha▫umæ garab kʰapæ jag æsaa. ||1|| rahaa▫o. They shall vanish in an instant; O madman, this is how the world is wasting away, in egotism and pride. ||1||Pause|| ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਪਰਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ जै जगदीस प्रभू रखवारे राखै परखै सोई ॥ Jæ jagḋees parabʰoo rakʰvaaré raakʰæ parkʰæ so▫ee. Hail to the Lord of the Universe, God, our Saving Grace; He judges and saves the mortal beings. ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਤੁਮੑ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥ जेती है तेती तुझ ही ते तुम्ह सरि अवरु न कोई ॥२॥ Jéṫee hæ ṫéṫee ṫujʰ hee ṫé ṫumĥ sar avar na ko▫ee. ||2|| All that is, belongs to You. No one else is equal to You. ||2|| ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਜਨੁ ॥ जीअ उपाइ जुगति वसि कीनी आपे गुरमुखि अंजनु ॥ Jee▫a upaa▫é jugaṫ vas keenee aapé gurmukʰ anjan. Creating all beings and creatures, their ways and means are under Your control; You bless the Gurmukhs with the ointment of spiritual wisdom. ਅਮਰੁ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਰਬ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੋਰਾ ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਭਰਮ ਭੈ ਖੰਜਨੁ ॥੩॥ अमरु अनाथ सरब सिरि मोरा काल बिकाल भरम भै खंजनु ॥३॥ Amar anaaṫʰ sarab sir moraa kaal bikaal bʰaram bʰæ kʰanjan. ||3|| My Eternal, Unmastered Lord is over the heads of all. He is the Destroyer of death and rebirth, doubt and fear. ||3|| ਕਾਗਦ ਕੋਟੁ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਬਪੁਰੋ ਰੰਗਨਿ ਚਿਹਨ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ कागद कोटु इहु जगु है बपुरो रंगनि चिहन चतुराई ॥ Kaagaḋ kot ih jag hæ bapuro rangan chihan chaṫuraa▫ee. This wretched world is a fortress of paper, of color and form and clever tricks. ਨਾਨੑੀ ਸੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਵਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਤਾਈ ॥੪॥ नान्ही सी बूंद पवनु पति खोवै जनमि मरै खिनु ताई ॥४॥ Naanĥee see boonḋ pavan paṫ kʰovæ janam maræ kʰin ṫaa▫eeⁿ. ||4|| A tiny drop of water or a little puff of wind destroys its glory; in an instant, its life is ended. ||4|| ਨਦੀ ਉਪਕੰਠਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਘਰੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ नदी उपकंठि जैसे घरु तरवरु सरपनि घरु घर माही ॥ Naḋee upkʰantʰ jæsé gʰar ṫarvar sarpan gʰar gʰar maahee. It is like a tree-house near the bank of a river, with a serpent’s den in that house. ਉਲਟੀ ਨਦੀ ਕਹਾਂ ਘਰੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਂਹੀ ॥੫॥ उलटी नदी कहां घरु तरवरु सरपनि डसै दूजा मन मांही ॥५॥ Ultee naḋee kahaaⁿ gʰar ṫarvar sarpan dasæ ḋoojaa man maaⁿhee. ||5|| When the river overflows, what happens to the tree house? The snake bites, like duality in the mind. ||5|| ਗਾਰੁੜ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਰੀ ॥ गारुड़ गुर गिआनु धिआनु गुर बचनी बिखिआ गुरमति जारी ॥ Gaaruṛ gur gi▫aan ḋʰi▫aan gur bachnee bikʰi▫aa gurmaṫ jaaree. Through the magic spell of the Guru’s spiritual wisdom, and meditation on the Word of the Guru’s Teachings, vice and corruption are burnt away. ਮਨ ਤਨ ਹੇਂਵ ਭਏ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥੬॥ मन तन हेंव भए सचु पाइआ हरि की भगति निरारी ॥६॥ Man ṫan héⁿv bʰa▫é sach paa▫i▫aa har kee bʰagaṫ niraaree. ||6|| The mind and body are cooled and soothed and Truth is obtained, through the wondrous and unique devotional worship of the Lord. ||6|| ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆਂ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ जेती है तेती तुधु जाचै तू सरब जीआं दइआला ॥ Jéṫee hæ ṫéṫee ṫuḋʰ jaachæ ṫoo sarab jee▫aaⁿ ḋa▫i▫aalaa. All that exists begs of You; You are merciful to all beings. ਤੁਮੑਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੭॥ तुम्हरी सरणि परे पति राखहु साचु मिलै गोपाला ॥७॥ Ṫumĥree saraṇ paré paṫ raakʰo saach milæ gopaalaa. ||7|| I seek Your Sanctuary; please save my honor, O Lord of the World, and bless me with Truth. ||7|| ਬਾਧੀ ਧੰਧਿ ਅੰਧ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਝੈ ਬਧਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ बाधी धंधि अंध नही सूझै बधिक करम कमावै ॥ Baaḋʰee ḋʰanḋʰ anḋʰ nahee soojʰæ baḋʰik karam kamaavæ. Bound in worldly affairs and entanglements, the blind one does not understand; he acts like a murderous butcher. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੂਝਸਿ ਸਚ ਮਨਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੮॥ सतिगुर मिलै त सूझसि बूझसि सच मनि गिआनु समावै ॥८॥ Saṫgur milæ ṫa soojʰas boojʰas sach man gi▫aan samaavæ. ||8|| But if he meets with the True Guru, then he comprehends and understands, and his mind is imbued with true spiritual wisdom. ||8|| ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਦੇਹ ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਮੈ ਪੂਛਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥ निरगुण देह साच बिनु काची मै पूछउ गुरु अपना ॥ Nirguṇ ḋéh saach bin kaachee mæ poochʰa▫o gur apnaa. Without the Truth, this worthless body is false; I have consulted my Guru on this. ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥੯॥੨॥ नानक सो प्रभु प्रभू दिखावै बिनु साचे जगु सुपना ॥९॥२॥ Naanak so parabʰ parabʰoo ḋikʰaavæ bin saaché jag supnaa. ||9||2|| O Nanak! That God has revealed God to me; without the Truth, all the world is just a dream. ||9||2|| ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੀਨ ਜਲ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥੧॥ चात्रिक मीन जल ही ते सुखु पावहि सारिंग सबदि सुहाई ॥१॥ Chaaṫrik meen jal hee ṫé sukʰ paavahi saaring sabaḋ suhaa▫ee. ||1|| The rainbird and the fish find peace in water; the deer is pleased by the sound of the bell. ||1||
