ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ प्रभाती महला ५ ॥ Parbʰaaṫee mėhlaa 5. Prabhaatee, Fifth Mehl: ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ मन महि क्रोधु महा अहंकारा ॥ Man mėh kroḋʰ mahaa ahaⁿkaaraa. Within the mind dwell anger and massive ego. ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ पूजा करहि बहुतु बिसथारा ॥ Poojaa karahi bahuṫ bisṫʰaaraa. Worship services are performed with great pomp and ceremony. ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥ करि इसनानु तनि चक्र बणाए ॥ Kar isnaan ṫan chakar baṇaa▫é. Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body. ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥ अंतर की मलु कब ही न जाए ॥१॥ Anṫar kee mal kab hee na jaa▫é. ||1|| But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1|| ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ इतु संजमि प्रभु किन ही न पाइआ ॥ Iṫ sanjam parabʰ kin hee na paa▫i▫aa. No one has ever found God in this way. ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ भगउती मुद्रा मनु मोहिआ माइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bʰag▫uṫee muḋraa man mohi▫aa maa▫i▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o. The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause|| ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ पाप करहि पंचां के बसि रे ॥ Paap karahi panchaaⁿ ké bas ré. They commit sins, under the influence of the five thieves. ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥ तीरथि नाइ कहहि सभि उतरे ॥ Ṫiraṫʰ naa▫é kahėh sabʰ uṫré. They bathe at sacred shrines, and claim that everything has been washed off. ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥ बहुरि कमावहि होइ निसंक ॥ Bahur kamaavėh ho▫é nisank. Then they commit them again, without fear of the consequences. ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥ जम पुरि बांधि खरे कालंक ॥२॥ Jam pur baaⁿḋʰ kʰaré kaalank. ||2|| The sinners are bound and gagged, and taken to the City of Death. ||2|| ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥ घूघर बाधि बजावहि ताला ॥ Gʰoogʰar baaḋʰ bajaavėh ṫaalaa. The ankle-bells shake and the cymbals vibrate, ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥ अंतरि कपटु फिरहि बेताला ॥ Anṫar kapat firėh béṫaalaa. but those who have deception within wander lost like demons. ਪੂੰਅਰ ਤਾਪ ਗੇਰੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥ पूंअर ताप गेरी के बसत्रा ॥ Pooⁿar ṫaap géree ké basṫaraa. You worship fire and wear saffron colored robes. ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥ प्रभु सभ किछु जानै जिनि तू कीआ ॥३॥ Parabʰ sabʰ kichʰ jaanæ jin ṫoo kee▫aa. ||3|| God, who created you, knows everything. ||3|| ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥ वरमी मारी सापु न मूआ ॥ varmee maaree saap na moo▫aa. By destroying its hole, the snake is not killed. ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥ अपदा का मारिआ ग्रिह ते नसता ॥ Apḋaa kaa maari▫aa garih ṫé nasṫaa. Stung by your misfortune, you abandon your home. ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥ देसु छोडि परदेसहि धाइआ ॥ Ḋés chʰod parḋésėh ḋʰaa▫i▫aa. Leaving your own country, you wander in foreign lands. ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥ पंच चंडाल नाले लै आइआ ॥४॥ Panch chandaal naalé læ aa▫i▫aa. ||4|| But you bring the five rejects with you. ||4|| ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥ कान फराइ हिराए टूका ॥ Kaan faraa▫é hiraa▫é tookaa. You have split your ears, and now you steal crumbs. ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥ घरि घरि मांगै त्रिपतावन ते चूका ॥ Gʰar gʰar maaⁿgæ ṫaripṫaavan ṫé chookaa. You beg from door to door, but you fail to be satisfied. ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ बनिता छोडि बद नदरि पर नारी ॥ Baniṫaa chʰod baḋ naḋar par naaree. You have abandoned your own wife, but now you sneak glances at other women. ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥ वेसि न पाईऐ महा दुखिआरी ॥५॥ vés na paa▫ee▫æ mahaa ḋukʰi▫aaree. ||5|| God is not found by wearing religious robes; you are utterly miserable! ||5|| ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥ बोलै नाही होइ बैठा मोनी ॥ Bolæ naahee ho▫é bætʰaa monee. Becoming a Moni Sadhu he remains silent and does not speak. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥ अंतरि कलप भवाईऐ जोनी ॥ Anṫar kalap bʰavaa▫ee▫æ jonee. But he is filled with desire; thus, he is made to wander in reincarnation. ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥ अंन ते रहता दुखु देही सहता ॥ Ann ṫé rahṫaa ḋukʰ ḋéhee sahṫaa. Abstaining from food, his body suffers in pain. ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥ हुकमु न बूझै विआपिआ ममता ॥६॥ Hukam na boojʰæ vi▫aapi▫aa mamṫaa. ||6|| He does not realize the Hukam of the Lord’s Command; he is afflicted by possessiveness. ||6|| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥ बिनु सतिगुर किनै न पाई परम गते ॥ Bin saṫgur kinæ na paa▫ee param gaṫé. Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme-status. ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥ पूछहु सगल बेद सिंम्रिते ॥ Poochʰahu sagal béḋ simriṫé. Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Smritis. ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥ जिउ बालू घर ठउर न ठाई ॥७॥ Ji▫o baaloo gʰar tʰa▫ur na tʰaa▫ee. ||7|| They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥ मनमुख करम करै अजाई ॥ Manmukʰ karam karæ ajaa▫ee. The self-willed Manmukhs do useless deeds. ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ जिस नो भए गुोबिंद दइआला ॥ Jis no bʰa▫é gobinḋ ḋa▫i▫aalaa. One unto whom the Lord of the Universe becomes Merciful, ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥ गुर का बचनु तिनि बाधिओ पाला ॥ Gur kaa bachan ṫin baaḋʰi▫o paalaa. sews the Word of the Guru’s Shabad into his robes. ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ कोटि मधे कोई संतु दिखाइआ ॥ Kot maḋʰé ko▫ee sanṫ ḋikʰaa▫i▫aa. Out of millions, it is rare that such a Saint is seen. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ नानकु तिन कै संगि तराइआ ॥८॥ Naanak ṫin kæ sang ṫaraa▫i▫aa. ||8|| O Nanak! With him, we are carried across. ||8|| ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ जे होवै भागु ता दरसनु पाईऐ ॥ Jé hovæ bʰaag ṫaa ḋarsan paa▫ee▫æ. If one has such a good destiny, then the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained. ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥ आपि तरै सभु कुट्मबु तराईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ दूजा ॥२॥ Aap ṫaræ sabʰ kutamb ṫaraa▫ee▫æ. ||1|| rahaa▫o ḋoojaa. ||2|| He saves himself, and carries across all his family as well. ||1||SECOND PAUSE||2||
