ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਕੀਆ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ ब्रहमै गरबु कीआ नही जानिआ ॥ Barahmæ garab kee▫aa nahee jaani▫aa. Brahma acted in pride, and did not understand. ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ गउड़ी महला १ ॥ Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1. Gauree, First Mehl: ਜਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਤਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ जह प्रभ सिमरे तही मनु मानिआ ॥१॥ Jah parabʰ simré ṫahee man maani▫aa. ||1|| Remembering God in meditation, the mind is conciliated. ||1|| ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪੜੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥ बेद की बिपति पड़ी पछुतानिआ ॥ Béḋ kee bipaṫ paṛee pachʰuṫaani▫aa. Only when he was faced with the downfall of the Vedas did he repent. ਐਸਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ ऐसा गरबु बुरा संसारै ॥ Æsaa garab buraa sansaaræ. Such is the horrible pride of the world. ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जिसु गुरु मिलै तिसु गरबु निवारै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Jis gur milæ ṫis garab nivaaræ. ||1|| rahaa▫o. The Guru eliminates the pride of those who meet Him. ||1||Pause|| ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ बलि राजा माइआ अहंकारी ॥ Bal raajaa maa▫i▫aa ahaⁿkaaree. Bal the King, in Maya and egotism, ਜਗਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥ जगन करै बहु भार अफारी ॥ Jagan karæ baho bʰaar afaaree. held his ceremonial feasts, but he was puffed up with pride. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛੇ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਰੀ ॥੨॥ बिनु गुर पूछे जाइ पइआरी ॥२॥ Bin gur poochʰé jaa▫é pa▫i▫aaree. ||2|| Without the Guru’s advice, he had to go to the underworld. ||2|| ਹਰੀਚੰਦੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਵੈ ॥ हरीचंदु दानु करै जसु लेवै ॥ Hareechanḋ ḋaan karæ jas lévæ. Hari Chand gave in charity, and earned public praise. ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ॥ दुरमति हरणाखसु दुराचारी ॥ Ḋurmaṫ harṇaakʰas ḋuraachaaree. The evil-minded Harnaakhash committed evil deeds. ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੩॥ आपि भुलाइ आपे मति देवै ॥३॥ Aap bʰulaa▫é aapé maṫ ḋévæ. ||3|| The Lord Himself misleads people, and He Himself imparts understanding. ||3|| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਅਭੇਵੈ ॥ बिनु गुर अंतु न पाइ अभेवै ॥ Bin gur anṫ na paa▫é abʰévæ. But without the Guru, he did not find the limits of the Mysterious Lord. ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਗਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥ प्रभु नाराइणु गरब प्रहारी ॥ Parabʰ naaraa▫iṇ garab par▫haaree. God, the Lord of all, is the Destroyer of pride. ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ प्रहलाद उधारे किरपा धारी ॥४॥ Parahlaaḋ uḋʰaaré kirpaa ḋʰaaree. ||4|| He bestowed His Mercy, and saved Prahlaad. ||4|| ਭੂਲੋ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਚੇਤਿ ॥ भूलो रावणु मुगधु अचेति ॥ Bʰoolo raavaṇ mugaḋʰ achéṫ. Raawan was deluded, foolish and unwise. ਲੂਟੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੀਸ ਸਮੇਤਿ ॥ लूटी लंका सीस समेति ॥ Lootee lankaa sees saméṫ. Sri Lanka was plundered, and he lost his head. ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ॥੫॥ गरबि गइआ बिनु सतिगुर हेति ॥५॥ Garab ga▫i▫aa bin saṫgur héṫ. ||5|| He indulged in ego, and lacked the love of the True Guru. ||5|| ਸਹਸਬਾਹੁ ਮਧੁ ਕੀਟ ਮਹਿਖਾਸਾ ॥ सहसबाहु मधु कीट महिखासा ॥ Sahasbaahu maḋʰ keet mahikʰaasaa. The Lord killed the thousand-armed Arjun, and the demons Madhu-keetab and Meh-khaasaa. ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਲੇ ਨਖਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਸਾ ॥ हरणाखसु ले नखहु बिधासा ॥ Harṇaakʰas lé nakʰahu biḋʰaasaa. He seized Harnaakhash and tore him apart with his nails. ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥੬॥ दैत संघारे बिनु भगति अभिआसा ॥६॥ Ḋæṫ sangʰaaré bin bʰagaṫ abʰi▫aasaa. ||6|| The demons were slain; they did not practice devotional worship. ||6|| ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥ जरासंधि कालजमुन संघारे ॥ Jaraasanḋʰ kaalajmun sangʰaaré. The demons Jaraa-sandh and Kaal-jamun were destroyed. ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ आपे सतिगुरु सबदु बीचारे ॥ Aapé saṫgur sabaḋ beechaaré. He Himself, as the True Guru, contemplates the Shabad. ਰਕਤਬੀਜੁ ਕਾਲੁਨੇਮੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥ रकतबीजु कालुनेमु बिदारे ॥ Rakaṫbeej kaaluném biḋaaré. Rakat-beej and Kaal-naym were annihilated. ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥ दैत संघारि संत निसतारे ॥७॥ Ḋæṫ sangʰaar sanṫ nisṫaaré. ||7|| Slaying the demons, the Lord saved His Saints. ||7|| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥ दूजै भाइ दैत संघारे ॥ Ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é ḋæṫ sangʰaaré. Because of the love of duality, God killed the demons. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥ गुरमुखि साचि भगति निसतारे ॥८॥ Gurmukʰ saach bʰagaṫ nisṫaaré. ||8|| By their true devotion, the Gurmukhs have been saved. ||8|| ਬੂਡਾ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥ बूडा दुरजोधनु पति खोई ॥ Boodaa ḋurjoḋʰan paṫ kʰo▫ee. Sinking down, Durodhan lost his honor. ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ रामु न जानिआ करता सोई ॥ Raam na jaani▫aa karṫaa so▫ee. He did not know the Creator Lord. ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥ जन कउ दूखि पचै दुखु होई ॥९॥ Jan ka▫o ḋookʰ pachæ ḋukʰ ho▫ee. ||9|| One who makes the Lord’s humble servant suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9|| ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ जनमेजै गुर सबदु न जानिआ ॥ Janméjæ gur sabaḋ na jaani▫aa. Janameja did not know the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੦॥ इकु तिलु भूले बहुरि पछुतानिआ ॥१०॥ Ik ṫil bʰoolé bahur pachʰuṫaani▫aa. ||10|| Making a mistake, for even an instant, you shall regret and repent later on. ||10|| ਕੰਸੁ ਕੇਸੁ ਚਾਂਡੂਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ कंसु केसु चांडूरु न कोई ॥ Kans kés chaaⁿdoor na ko▫ee. Kansa the King and his warriors Kays and Chandoor had no equals. ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥ किउ सुखु पावै भरमि भुलानिआ ॥ Ki▫o sukʰ paavæ bʰaram bʰulaani▫aa. Deluded by doubt, how could he find peace? ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥ रामु न चीनिआ अपनी पति खोई ॥ Raam na cheeni▫aa apnee paṫ kʰo▫ee. But they did not remember the Lord, and they lost their honor. ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੧॥ बिनु जगदीस न राखै कोई ॥११॥ Bin jagḋees na raakʰæ ko▫ee. ||11|| Without the Lord of the Universe, no one can be saved. ||11|| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ बिनु गुर गरबु न मेटिआ जाइ ॥ Bin gur garab na méti▫aa jaa▫é. Without the Guru, pride cannot be eradicated. ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ गुरमति धरमु धीरजु हरि नाइ ॥ Gurmaṫ ḋʰaram ḋʰeeraj har naa▫é. Following the Guru’s Teachings, one obtains Dharmic faith, composure and the Lord’s Name. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੧੨॥੯॥ नानक नामु मिलै गुण गाइ ॥१२॥९॥ Naanak naam milæ guṇ gaa▫é. ||12||9|| O Nanak! Singing the Glories of God, His Name is received. ||12||9|| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ बिनु हरि नाम कहा सुखु पावउ ॥१॥ Bin har naam kahaa sukʰ paava▫o. ||1|| But without the Lord’s Name, where would I find peace? ||1|| ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਚੜਾਵਉ ॥ चोआ चंदनु अंकि चड़ावउ ॥ Cho▫aa chanḋan ank chaṛaava▫o. I may anoint my limbs with sandalwood oil.
