ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਚੜਾਵਉ ॥ चोआ चंदनु अंकि चड़ावउ ॥ Cho▫aa chanḋan ank chaṛaava▫o. I may anoint my limbs with sandalwood oil. ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ गउड़ी महला १ ॥ Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1. Gauree, First Mehl: ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ बिनु हरि नाम कहा सुखु पावउ ॥१॥ Bin har naam kahaa sukʰ paava▫o. ||1|| But without the Lord’s Name, where would I find peace? ||1|| ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹਢਾਵਉ ॥ पाट पट्मबर पहिरि हढावउ ॥ Paat patambar pahir hadʰaava▫o. I may dress up and wear silk and satin clothes. ਕਿਆ ਪਹਿਰਉ ਕਿਆ ਓਢਿ ਦਿਖਾਵਉ ॥ किआ पहिरउ किआ ओढि दिखावउ ॥ Ki▫aa pahira▫o ki▫aa odʰ ḋikʰaava▫o. So, what should I wear? In what clothes should I display myself? ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ बिनु जगदीस कहा सुखु पावउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bin jagḋees kahaa sukʰ paava▫o. ||1|| rahaa▫o. Without the Lord of the Universe, how can I find peace? ||1||Pause|| ਕਾਨੀ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਗਲਿ ਮੋਤੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥ कानी कुंडल गलि मोतीअन की माला ॥ Kaanee kundal gal moṫee▫an kee maalaa. I may wear earrings, and a pearl necklace around my neck; ਲਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਫੂਲ ਗੁਲਾਲਾ ॥ लाल निहाली फूल गुलाला ॥ Laal nihaalee fool gulaalaa. my bed may be adorned with red blankets, flowers and red powder; ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਲਾ ॥੨॥ बिनु जगदीस कहा सुखु भाला ॥२॥ Bin jagḋees kahaa sukʰ bʰaalaa. ||2|| but without the Lord of the Universe, where can I search for peace? ||2|| ਨੈਨ ਸਲੋਨੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ नैन सलोनी सुंदर नारी ॥ Næn salonee sunḋar naaree. I may have a beautiful woman with fascinating eyes; ਖੋੜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਰੈ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥ खोड़ सीगार करै अति पिआरी ॥ Kʰoṛ seegaar karæ aṫ pi▫aaree. she may decorate herself with the sixteen adornments, and make herself appear gorgeous. ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਭਜੇ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੩॥ बिनु जगदीस भजे नित खुआरी ॥३॥ Bin jagḋees bʰajé niṫ kʰu▫aaree. ||3|| But without meditating on the Lord of the Universe, there is only continual suffering. ||3|| ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ॥ दर घर महला सेज सुखाली ॥ Ḋar gʰar mėhlaa séj sukʰaalee. In his hearth and home, in his palace, upon his soft and comfortable bed, ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥ अहिनिसि फूल बिछावै माली ॥ Ahinis fool bichʰaavæ maalee. day and night, the flower-girls scatter flower petals; ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥੪॥ बिनु हरि नाम सु देह दुखाली ॥४॥ Bin har naam so ḋéh ḋukʰaalee. ||4|| but without the Lord’s Name, the body is miserable. ||4|| ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ॥ हैवर गैवर नेजे वाजे ॥ Hævar gævar néjé vaajé. Horses, elephants, lances, marching bands, ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥ बिनु जगदीस झूठे दिवाजे ॥५॥ Bin jagḋees jʰootʰé ḋivaajé. ||5|| without the Lord of the Universe, these undertakings are all useless. ||5|| ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਪਾਜੇ ॥ लसकर नेब खवासी पाजे ॥ Laskar néb kʰavaasee paajé. armies, standard bearers, royal attendants and ostentatious displays - ਸਿਧੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਉ ॥ सिधु कहावउ रिधि सिधि बुलावउ ॥ Siḋʰ kahaava▫o riḋʰ siḋʰ bulaava▫o. He may be called a Siddha, a man of spiritual perfection, and he may summon riches and supernatural powers; ਤਾਜ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਵਉ ॥ ताज कुलह सिरि छत्रु बनावउ ॥ Ṫaaj kulah sir chʰaṫar banaava▫o. he may place a crown upon his head, and carry a royal umbrella; ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੬॥ बिनु जगदीस कहा सचु पावउ ॥६॥ Bin jagḋees kahaa sach paava▫o. ||6|| but without the Lord of the Universe, where can Truth be found? ||6|| ਖਾਨੁ ਮਲੂਕੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਾਜਾ ॥ खानु मलूकु कहावउ राजा ॥ Kʰaan malook kahaava▫o raajaa. He may be called an emperor, a lord, and a king; ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਜਾ ॥ अबे तबे कूड़े है पाजा ॥ Abé ṫabé kooṛé hæ paajaa. he may give orders - “Do this now, do this then” - but this is a false display. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸਵਰਸਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੭॥ बिनु गुर सबद न सवरसि काजा ॥७॥ Bin gur sabaḋ na savras kaajaa. ||7|| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, his works are not accomplished. ||7|| ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੧੦॥ प्रणवति नानक सरणि तुमारी ॥८॥१०॥ Paraṇvaṫ Naanak saraṇ ṫumaaree. ||8||10|| Prays Nanak, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||8||10|| ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥ हउमै ममता गुर सबदि विसारी ॥ Ha▫umæ mamṫaa gur sabaḋ visaaree. Egotism and possessiveness are dispelled by the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ गुरमति जानिआ रिदै मुरारी ॥ Gurmaṫ jaani▫aa riḋæ muraaree. With the Guru’s Teachings in my heart, I have come to know the Lord.
