ਮਛੁਲੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਰੁ ਖਾਰਾ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ॥ मछुली जालु न जाणिआ सरु खारा असगाहु ॥ Machʰulee jaal na jaaṇi▫aa sar kʰaaraa asgaahu. The fish did not notice the net in the deep and salty sea. ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ सिरीरागु महला १ ॥ Sireeraag mėhlaa 1. Siree Raag, First Mehl: ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥ अति सिआणी सोहणी किउ कीतो वेसाहु ॥ Aṫ si▫aaṇee sohṇee ki▫o keeṫo vésaahu. It was so clever and beautiful, but why was it so confident? ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਕੜੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਟਲੈ ਸਿਰਾਹੁ ॥੧॥ कीते कारणि पाकड़ी कालु न टलै सिराहु ॥१॥ Keeṫé kaaraṇ paakṛee kaal na talæ siraahu. ||1|| By its actions it was caught, and now death cannot be turned away from its head. ||1|| ਜਿਉ ਮਛੀ ਤਿਉ ਮਾਣਸਾ ਪਵੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जिउ मछी तिउ माणसा पवै अचिंता जालु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Ji▫o machʰee ṫi▫o maaṇsaa pavæ achinṫaa jaal. ||1|| rahaa▫o. People are just like this fish; unaware, the noose of death descends upon them. ||1||Pause|| ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਕਾਲੁ ॥ भाई रे इउ सिरि जाणहु कालु ॥ Bʰaa▫ee ré i▫o sir jaaṇhu kaal. O Siblings of Destiny, just like this, see death hovering over your own heads! ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧੋ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥ सभु जगु बाधो काल को बिनु गुर कालु अफारु ॥ Sabʰ jag baaḋʰo kaal ko bin gur kaal afaar. The whole world is bound by death; without the Guru, death cannot be avoided. ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥ सचि रते से उबरे दुबिधा छोडि विकार ॥ Sach raṫé sé ubré ḋubiḋʰaa chʰod vikaar. Those who are attuned to Truth are saved; they renounce duality and corruption. ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥੨॥ हउ तिन कै बलिहारणै दरि सचै सचिआर ॥२॥ Ha▫o ṫin kæ balihaarṇæ ḋar sachæ sachiaar. ||2|| I am a sacrifice to those who are found to be Truthful in the True Court. ||2|| ਸੀਚਾਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੀਆ ਜਾਲੀ ਬਧਿਕ ਹਾਥਿ ॥ सीचाने जिउ पंखीआ जाली बधिक हाथि ॥ Seechaané ji▫o pankʰee▫aa jaalee baḋʰik haaṫʰ. Think of the hawk preying on the birds, and the net in the hands of the hunter. ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਚੋਗੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥ गुरि राखे से उबरे होरि फाथे चोगै साथि ॥ Gur raakʰé sé ubré hor faaṫʰé chogæ saaṫʰ. Those who are protected by the Guru are saved; the others are caught by the bait. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਚੁਣਿ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੩॥ बिनु नावै चुणि सुटीअहि कोइ न संगी साथि ॥३॥ Bin naavæ chuṇ sutee▫ah ko▫é na sangee saaṫʰ. ||3|| Without the Name, they are picked up and thrown away; they have no friends or companions. ||3|| ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥ सचो सचा आखीऐ सचे सचा थानु ॥ Sacho sachaa aakʰee▫æ saché sachaa ṫʰaan. God is said to be the Truest of the True; His Place is the Truest of the True. ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ जिनी सचा मंनिआ तिन मनि सचु धिआनु ॥ Jinee sachaa mani▫aa ṫin man sach ḋʰi▫aan. Those who obey the True One-their minds abide in true meditation. ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਚੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥ मनि मुखि सूचे जाणीअहि गुरमुखि जिना गिआनु ॥४॥ Man mukʰ sooché jaaṇee▫ahi gurmukʰ jinaa gi▫aan. ||4|| Those who become Gurmukh, and obtain spiritual wisdom-their minds and mouths are known to be pure. ||4|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ सतिगुर अगै अरदासि करि साजनु देइ मिलाइ ॥ Saṫgur agæ arḋaas kar saajan ḋé▫é milaa▫é. Offer your most sincere prayers to the True Guru, so that He may unite you with your Best Friend. ਸਾਜਨਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ साजनि मिलिऐ सुखु पाइआ जमदूत मुए बिखु खाइ ॥ Saajan mili▫æ sukʰ paa▫i▫aa jamḋooṫ mu▫é bikʰ kʰaa▫é. Meeting your Best Friend, you shall find peace; the Messenger of Death shall take poison and die. ਨਾਵੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਉ ਵਸਾਂ ਨਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੫॥ नावै अंदरि हउ वसां नाउ वसै मनि आइ ॥५॥ Naavæ anḋar ha▫o vasaaⁿ naa▫o vasæ man aa▫é. ||5|| I dwell deep within the Name; the Name has come to dwell within my mind. ||5|| ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ बाझु गुरू गुबारु है बिनु सबदै बूझ न पाइ ॥ Baajʰ guroo gubaar hæ bin sabḋæ boojʰ na paa▫é. Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness; without the Shabad, understanding is not obtained. ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ गुरमती परगासु होइ सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥ Gurmaṫee pargaas ho▫é sach rahæ liv laa▫é. Through the Guru’s Teachings, you shall be enlightened; remain absorbed in the Love of the True Lord. ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੰਚਰੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥ तिथै कालु न संचरै जोती जोति समाइ ॥६॥ Ṫiṫʰæ kaal na sanchræ joṫee joṫ samaa▫é. ||6|| Death does not go there; your light shall merge with the Light. ||6|| ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ तूंहै साजनु तूं सुजाणु तूं आपे मेलणहारु ॥ Ṫooⁿhæ saajan ṫooⁿ sujaaṇ ṫooⁿ aapé mélaṇhaar. You are my Best Friend; You are All-knowing. You are the One who unites us with Yourself. ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ गुर सबदी सालाहीऐ अंतु न पारावारु ॥ Gur sabḋee salaahee▫æ anṫ na paaraavaar. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, we praise You; You have no end or limitation. ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਅਪੜੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥ तिथै कालु न अपड़ै जिथै गुर का सबदु अपारु ॥७॥ Ṫiṫʰæ kaal na apṛæ jiṫʰæ gur kaa sabaḋ apaar. ||7|| Death does not reach that place, where the Infinite Word of the Guru’s Shabad resounds. ||7|| ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਭੇ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ हुकमी सभे ऊपजहि हुकमी कार कमाहि ॥ Hukmee sabʰé oopjahi hukmee kaar kamaahi. By the Hukam of His Command, all are created. By His Command, actions are performed. ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥ हुकमी कालै वसि है हुकमी साचि समाहि ॥ Hukmee kaalæ vas hæ hukmee saach samaahi. By His Command, all are subject to death; by His Command, they merge in Truth. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਇਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੮॥੪॥ नानक जो तिसु भावै सो थीऐ इना जंता वसि किछु नाहि ॥८॥४॥ Naanak jo ṫis bʰaavæ so ṫʰee▫æ inaa janṫaa vas kichʰ naahi. ||8||4|| O Nanak! Whatever pleases His Will comes to pass. Nothing is in the hands of these beings. ||8||4||
