ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੀਤਲ ਜਲੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਗੰਧਈਆ ॥ हरि हरि नामु सीतल जलु धिआवहु हरि चंदन वासु सुगंध गंधईआ ॥ Har har naam seeṫal jal ḋʰi▫aavahu har chanḋan vaas suganḋʰ ganḋʰ▫ee▫aa. Meditate on the cool water of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Perfume yourself with the fragrant scent of the Lord, the sandalwood tree. ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ बिलावलु महला ४ ॥ Bilaaval mėhlaa 4. Bilaaval, Fourth Mehl: ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਹਿਰਡ ਪਲਾਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਹੀਆ ॥੧॥ मिलि सतसंगति परम पदु पाइआ मै हिरड पलास संगि हरि बुहीआ ॥१॥ Mil saṫsangaṫ param paḋ paa▫i▫aa mæ hirad palaas sang har buhee▫aa. ||1|| By joining the Society of the Saints, I have obtained the supreme-status. I am just a castor-oil tree, made fragrant by their association. ||1|| ਜਪਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗੁਸਈਆ ॥ जपि जगंनाथ जगदीस गुसईआ ॥ Jap jagannaaṫʰ jagḋees gus▫ee▫aa. Meditate on the Lord of the Universe, the Master of the world, the Lord of creation. ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ सरणि परे सेई जन उबरे जिउ प्रहिलाद उधारि समईआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Saraṇ paré sé▫ee jan ubré ji▫o par▫hilaaḋ uḋʰaar sama▫ee▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o. Those humble beings who seek the Lord’s Sanctuary are saved, like Prahlaad; they are emancipated and merge with the Lord. ||1||Pause|| ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਹਿ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਊਤਮ ਚੰਦਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਸਭ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਹੁਈਆ ॥ भार अठारह महि चंदनु ऊतम चंदन निकटि सभ चंदनु हुईआ ॥ Bʰaar atʰaarah mėh chanḋan ooṫam chanḋan nikat sabʰ chanḋan hu▫ee▫aa. Of all plants, the sandalwood tree is the most sublime. Everything near the sandalwood tree becomes fragrant like sandalwood. ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਊਭ ਸੁਕ ਹੂਏ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਗਈਆ ॥੨॥ साकत कूड़े ऊभ सुक हूए मनि अभिमानु विछुड़ि दूरि गईआ ॥२॥ Saakaṫ kooṛé oobʰ suk hoo▫é man abʰimaan vichʰuṛ ḋoor ga▫ee▫aa. ||2|| The stubborn, false faithless cynics are dried up; their egotistical pride separates them far from the Lord. ||2|| ਹਰਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਬਨਈਆ ॥ हरि गति मिति करता आपे जाणै सभ बिधि हरि हरि आपि बनईआ ॥ Har gaṫ miṫ karṫaa aapé jaaṇæ sabʰ biḋʰ har har aap bana▫ee▫aa. Only the Creator Lord Himself knows the state and condition of everyone; the Lord Himself makes all the arrangements. ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਮਿਟਈਆ ॥੩॥ जिसु सतिगुरु भेटे सु कंचनु होवै जो धुरि लिखिआ सु मिटै न मिटईआ ॥३॥ Jis saṫgur bʰété so kanchan hovæ jo ḋʰur likʰi▫aa so mitæ na mita▫ee▫aa. ||3|| One who meets the True Guru is transformed into gold. Whatever is preordained, is not erased by erasing. ||3|| ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਖੁਲੑਈਆ ॥ रतन पदारथ गुरमति पावै सागर भगति भंडार खुल्हईआ ॥ Raṫan paḋaaraṫʰ gurmaṫ paavæ saagar bʰagaṫ bʰandaar kʰulĥ▫ee▫aa. The treasure of jewels is found in the ocean of the Guru’s Teachings. The treasure of devotional worship is opened to me. ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਇਕ ਸਰਧਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਭਈਆ ॥੪॥ गुर चरणी इक सरधा उपजी मै हरि गुण कहते त्रिपति न भईआ ॥४॥ Gur charṇee ik sarḋʰaa upjee mæ har guṇ kahṫé ṫaripaṫ na bʰa▫ee▫aa. ||4|| Focused on the Guru’s Feet, faith wells up within me; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I hunger for more. ||4|| ਪਰਮ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਏ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤੇ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਕਹੀਆ ॥ परम बैरागु नित नित हरि धिआए मै हरि गुण कहते भावनी कहीआ ॥ Param bæraag niṫ niṫ har ḋʰi▫aa▫é mæ har guṇ kahṫé bʰaavnee kahee▫aa. I am totally detached, continually, continuously meditating on the Lord; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I express my love for Him. ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਰੈ ਪਰਈਆ ॥੫॥ बार बार खिनु खिनु पलु कहीऐ हरि पारु न पावै परै परईआ ॥५॥ Baar baar kʰin kʰin pal kahee▫æ har paar na paavæ paræ para▫ee▫aa. ||5|| Time and time again, each and every moment and instant, I express it. I cannot find the Lord’s limits; He is the farthest of the far. ||5|| ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੁਕਾਰਹਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥ सासत बेद पुराण पुकारहि धरमु करहु खटु करम द्रिड़ईआ ॥ Saasaṫ béḋ puraaṇ pukaarėh ḋʰaram karahu kʰat karam ḋariṛa▫ee▫aa. The Shastras, the Vedas and the Puranas advise righteous actions, and the performance of the six religious rituals. ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥ नामु जपहु नामे गति पावहु सिम्रिति सासत्र नामु द्रिड़ईआ ॥ Naam japahu naamé gaṫ paavhu simriṫ saasṫar naam ḋariṛ▫ee▫aa. So, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and through the Naam, find emancipation. The Smritis and Shastras recommend the Naam. ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਨਾਵ ਭਾਰਿ ਬੁਡਈਆ ॥੬॥ मनमुख पाखंडि भरमि विगूते लोभ लहरि नाव भारि बुडईआ ॥६॥ Manmukʰ pakʰand bʰaram vigooṫé lobʰ lahar naav bʰaar buda▫ee▫aa. ||6|| The hypocritical, self-willed Manmukhs are ruined by doubt; in the waves of greed, their boat is heavily loaded, and it sinks. ||6|| ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਈਆ ॥੭॥ हउमै जाइ त निरमलु होवै गुरमुखि परचै परम पदु पईआ ॥७॥ Ha▫umæ jaa▫é ṫa nirmal hovæ gurmukʰ parchæ param paḋ pa▫ee▫aa. ||7|| Eradicating egotism, one becomes pure. The Gurmukh is inspired, and obtains the supreme-status. ||7|| ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਵਰਨੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਈਆ ॥ इहु जगु वरनु रूपु सभु तेरा जितु लावहि से करम कमईआ ॥ Ih jag varan roop sabʰ ṫéraa jiṫ laavėh sé karam kama▫ee▫aa. This world, with its colors and forms, is all Yours, O Lord; as You attach us, so do we do our deeds. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਵਜਾਏ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਚਲਈਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥ नानक जंत वजाए वाजहि जितु भावै तितु राहि चलईआ ॥८॥२॥५॥ Naanak janṫ vajaa▫é vaajėh jiṫ bʰaavæ ṫiṫ raahi chala▫ee▫aa. ||8||2||5|| O Nanak! We are the instruments upon which He plays; as He wills, so is the path we take. ||8||2||5||
