ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਵੈ ॥
हउमै बंधन बंधि भवावै ॥
Ha▫umæ banḋʰan banḋʰ bʰavaavæ.
Egotism binds people in bondage, and causes them to wander around lost.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧੩॥
नानक राम भगति सुखु पावै ॥८॥१३॥
Naanak raam bʰagaṫ sukʰ paavæ. ||8||13||
O Nanak! Peace is obtained through devotional worship of the Lord. ||8||13||

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਕਾਲੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
प्रथमे ब्रहमा कालै घरि आइआ ॥
Paraṫʰmé barahmaa kaalæ gʰar aa▫i▫aa.
First, Brahma entered the house of Death.
|
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਇਆਲਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ब्रहम कमलु पइआलि न पाइआ ॥
Barahm kamal pa▫i▫aal na paa▫i▫aa.
Brahma entered the lotus, and searched the nether regions, but he did not find the end of it.

ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਨੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
आगिआ नही लीनी भरमि भुलाइआ ॥१॥
Aagi▫aa nahee leenee bʰaram bʰulaa▫i▫aa. ||1||
He did not accept the Lord’s Order - he was deluded by doubt. ||1||
|
ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਿ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਆ ॥
जो उपजै सो कालि संघारिआ ॥
Jo upjæ so kaal sangʰaari▫aa.
Whoever is created, shall be destroyed by Death.
|
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
हम हरि राखे गुर सबदु बीचारिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ham har raakʰé gur sabaḋ beechaari▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
But I am protected by the Lord; I contemplate the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||1||Pause||
|
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
माइआ मोहे देवी सभि देवा ॥
Maa▫i▫aa mohé ḋévee sabʰ ḋévaa.
All the gods and goddesses are enticed by Maya.

ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
कालु न छोडै बिनु गुर की सेवा ॥
Kaal na chʰodæ bin gur kee sévaa.
Death cannot be avoided, without serving the Guru.

ਓਹੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੨॥
ओहु अबिनासी अलख अभेवा ॥२॥
Oh abʰinaasee alakʰ abʰévaa. ||2||
That Lord is Imperishable, Invisible and Inscrutable. ||2||
|
ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਨਾ ॥
सुलतान खान बादिसाह नही रहना ॥
Sulṫaan kʰaan baaḋisaah nahee rahnaa.
The sultans, emperors and kings shall not remain.
|
ਨਾਮਹੁ ਭੂਲੈ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਨਾ ॥
नामहु भूलै जम का दुखु सहना ॥
Naamhu bʰoolæ jam kaa ḋukʰ sahnaa.
Forgetting the Name, they shall endure the pain of death.
|
ਮੈ ਧਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹਨਾ ॥੩॥
मै धर नामु जिउ राखहु रहना ॥३॥
Mæ ḋʰar naam ji▫o raakʰo rahnaa. ||3||
My only Support is the Naam, the Name of the Lord; as He keeps me, I survive. ||3||
|
ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ॥
चउधरी राजे नही किसै मुकामु ॥
Cha▫uḋʰree raajé nahee kisæ mukaam.
The leaders and kings shall not remain.
|
ਸਾਹ ਮਰਹਿ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਮ ॥
साह मरहि संचहि माइआ दाम ॥
Saah marėh saⁿchėh maa▫i▫aa ḋaam.
The bankers shall die, after accumulating their wealth and money.
|
ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੪॥
मै धनु दीजै हरि अमृत नामु ॥४॥
Mæ ḋʰan ḋeejæ har amriṫ naam. ||4||
Grant me, O Lord, the wealth of Your Ambrosial Naam. ||4||
|
ਰਯਤਿ ਮਹਰ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੈ ॥
रयति महर मुकदम सिकदारै ॥
Ra▫yaṫ mahar mukḋam sikḋaaræ.
The people, rulers, leaders and chiefs -
|
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
निहचलु कोइ न दिसै संसारै ॥
Nihchal ko▫é na ḋisæ sansaaræ.
none of them shall be able to remain in the world.
|
ਅਫਰਿਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੫॥
अफरिउ कालु कूड़ु सिरि मारै ॥५॥
Afri▫o kaal kooṛ sir maaræ. ||5||
Death is inevitable; it strikes the heads of the false. ||5||
|
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
निहचलु एकु सचा सचु सोई ॥
Nihchal ék sachaa sach so▫ee.
Only the One Lord, the Truest of the True, is permanent.
|
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਸਭ ਗੋਈ ॥
जिनि करि साजी तिनहि सभ गोई ॥
Jin kar saajee ṫinėh sabʰ go▫ee.
He who created and fashioned everything, shall destroy it.
|
ਓਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਤਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
ओहु गुरमुखि जापै तां पति होई ॥६॥
Oh gurmukʰ jaapæ ṫaaⁿ paṫ ho▫ee. ||6||
One who becomes Gurmukh and meditates on the Lord is honored. ||6||

ਕਾਜੀ ਸੇਖ ਭੇਖ ਫਕੀਰਾ ॥
काजी सेख भेख फकीरा ॥
Kaajee sékʰ bʰékʰ fakeeraa.
The Qazis, Shaykhs and Fakeers in religious robes
|
ਵਡੇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਪੀਰਾ ॥
वडे कहावहि हउमै तनि पीरा ॥
vadé kahaavėh ha▫umæ ṫan peeraa.
call themselves great; but through their egotism, their bodies are suffering in pain.

ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੭॥
कालु न छोडै बिनु सतिगुर की धीरा ॥७॥
Kaal na chʰodæ bin saṫgur kee ḋʰeeraa. ||7||
Death does not spare them, without the Support of the True Guru. ||7||
|
ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਅਰੁ ਨੈਣੀ ॥
कालु जालु जिहवा अरु नैणी ॥
Kaal jaal jihvaa ar næṇee.
The trap of Death is hanging over their tongues and eyes.
|
ਕਾਨੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੈਣੀ ॥
कानी कालु सुणै बिखु बैणी ॥
Kaanee kaal suṇæ bikʰ bæṇee.
Death is over their ears, when they hear talk of evil.
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥
बिनु सबदै मूठे दिनु रैणी ॥८॥
Bin sabḋæ mootʰé ḋin ræṇee. ||8||
Without the Shabad, they are plundered, day and night. ||8||
|
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
हिरदै साचु वसै हरि नाइ ॥
Hirḋæ saach vasæ har naa▫é.
To those whose hearts are filled with the True Name of the Lord,
|
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹਿ ਸਕੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥
कालु न जोहि सकै गुण गाइ ॥
Kaal na johi sakæ guṇ gaa▫é.
and who sing the Glories of God, the death cannot touch.
|
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੯॥੧੪॥
नानक गुरमुखि सबदि समाइ ॥९॥१४॥
Naanak gurmukʰ sabaḋ samaa▫é. ||9||14||
O Nanak! The Gurmukh is absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||9||14||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਈ ॥
बोलहि साचु मिथिआ नही राई ॥
Bolėh saach miṫʰi▫aa nahee raa▫ee.
They speak the Truth - not an iota of falsehood.

ਚਾਲਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
चालहि गुरमुखि हुकमि रजाई ॥
Chaalėh gurmukʰ hukam rajaa▫ee.
The Gurmukhs walk in the Way of the Lord’s Command.

ਰਹਹਿ ਅਤੀਤ ਸਚੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥
रहहि अतीत सचे सरणाई ॥१॥
Rahėh aṫeeṫ saché sarṇaa▫ee. ||1||
They remain unattached, in the Sanctuary of the True Lord. ||1||
|
ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ॥
सच घरि बैसै कालु न जोहै ॥
Sach gʰar bæsæ kaal na johæ.
They dwell in their true home, and Death does not touch them.
|
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
मनमुख कउ आवत जावत दुखु मोहै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Manmukʰ ka▫o aavaṫ jaavaṫ ḋukʰ mohæ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.
The self-willed Manmukhs come and go, in the pain of emotional attachment. ||1||Pause||
|
ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਅਉ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
अपिउ पीअउ अकथु कथि रहीऐ ॥
Api▫o pee▫a▫o akaṫʰ kaṫʰ rahee▫æ.
So, drink deeply of this Nectar, and speak the Unspoken Speech.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
निज घरि बैसि सहज घरु लहीऐ ॥
Nij gʰar bæs sahj gʰar lahee▫æ.
Dwelling in the home of your own being within, you shall find the home of intuitive peace.
|
ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੨॥
हरि रसि माते इहु सुखु कहीऐ ॥२॥
Har ras maaṫé ih sukʰ kahee▫æ. ||2||
One who is imbued with the Lord’s sublime essence, is said to experience this peace. ||2||
|
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਾਲ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਹੀ ਡੋਲੈ ॥
गुरमति चाल निहचल नही डोलै ॥
Gurmaṫ chaal nihchal nahee dolæ.
Following the Guru’s Teachings, one becomes perfectly stable, and never wavers.
|
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ॥
गुरमति साचि सहजि हरि बोलै ॥
Gurmaṫ saach sahj har bolæ.
Following the Guru’s Teachings, one intuitively chants the Name of the True Lord.
|
ਪੀਵੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥੩॥
पीवै अमृतु ततु विरोलै ॥३॥
Peevæ amriṫ ṫaṫ virolæ. ||3||
Drinking in this Ambrosial Nectar, and churning it, the essential reality is discerned. ||3||
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੀਨੀ ॥
सतिगुरु देखिआ दीखिआ लीनी ॥
Saṫgur ḋékʰi▫aa ḋeekʰi▫aa leenee.
Beholding the True Guru, I have received His Teachings.
|
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿਓ ਅੰਤਰ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
मनु तनु अरपिओ अंतर गति कीनी ॥
Man ṫan arpi▫o anṫar gaṫ keenee.
I have offered my mind and body, after searching deep within my own being.
|
ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੪॥
गति मिति पाई आतमु चीनी ॥४॥
Gaṫ miṫ paa▫ee aaṫam cheenee. ||4||
I have come to realize the value of understanding my own soul. ||4||
|
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
भोजनु नामु निरंजन सारु ॥
Bʰojan naam niranjan saar.
The Naam, the Name of the Immaculate Lord, is the most excellent and sublime food.
|
ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
परम हंसु सचु जोति अपार ॥
Param hans sach joṫ apaar.
The pure swan-souls see the True Light of the Infinite Lord.
|
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
जह देखउ तह एकंकारु ॥५॥
Jah ḋékʰ▫a▫u ṫah ékankaar. ||5||
Wherever I look, I see the One and Only Lord. ||5||
|
ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਏਕਾ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
रहै निरालमु एका सचु करणी ॥
Rahæ niraalam ékaa sach karṇee.
One who remains pure and unblemished and practices only true deeds,
|
ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ॥
परम पदु पाइआ सेवा गुर चरणी ॥
Param paḋ paa▫i▫aa sévaa gur charṇee.
obtains the supreme-status, serving at the Guru’s Feet.

ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਚੂਕੀ ਅਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਮਣੀ ॥੬॥
मन ते मनु मानिआ चूकी अहं भ्रमणी ॥६॥
Man ṫé man maani▫aa chookee ahaⁿ bʰarmaṇee. ||6||
The mind is reconciled with the mind, and the ego’s wandering ways come to an end. ||6||
|
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
इन बिधि कउणु कउणु नही तारिआ ॥
In biḋʰ ka▫uṇ ka▫uṇ nahee ṫaari▫aa.
In this way, who - who has not been saved?
|
ਹਰਿ ਜਸਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
हरि जसि संत भगत निसतारिआ ॥
Har jas sanṫ bʰagaṫ nisṫaari▫aa.
The Lord’s Praises have saved His Saints and devotees.
