pauxY pwxI AgnI jIau iqn ikAw KusIAw ikAw pIV ] (1289-1)
pa-unai paanee agnee jee-o tin ki-aa khusee-aa ki-aa peerh.
Living beings are formed of air, water and fire. They are subject to pleasure and pain.

DrqI pwqwlI AwkwsI ieik dir rhin vjIr ] (1289-1)
Dhartee paataalee aakaasee ik dar rahan vajeer.
In this world, in the nether regions of the underworld, and in the Akaashic ethers of the heavens, some remain ministers in the Court of the Lord.

ieknw vfI Awrjw ieik mir hoih jhIr ] (1289-2)
iknaa vadee aarjaa ik mar hohi jaheer.
Some live long lives, while others suffer and die.

ieik dy Kwih inKutY nwhI ieik sdw iPrih PkIr ] (1289-2)
ik day khaahi nikhutai naahee ik sadaa fireh fakeer.
Some give and consume, and still their wealth is not exhausted, while others remain poor forever.

hukmI swjy hukmI Fwhy eyk csy mih lK ] (1289-3)
hukmee saajay hukmee dhaahay ayk chasay meh lakh.
In His Will He creates, and in His Will He destroys thousands in an instant.

sBu ko nQY niQAw bKsy qoVy nQ ] (1289-3)
sabh ko nathai nathi-aa bakhsay torhay nath.
He has harnessed everyone with His harness; when He forgives, he breaks the harness.

vrnw ichnw bwhrw lyKy bwJu AlKu ] (1289-4)
varnaa chihnaa baahraa laykhay baajh alakh.
He has no color or features; He is invisible and beyond calculation.

ikau kQIAY ikau AwKIAY jwpY sco scu ] (1289-4)
ki-o kathee-ai ki-o aakhee-ai jaapai sacho sach.
How can He be described? He is known as the Truest of the True.

krxw kQnw kwr sB nwnk Awip AkQu ] (1289-4)
karnaa kathnaa kaar sabh naanak aap akath.
All the actions which are done and described, O Nanak, are done by the Indescribable Lord Himself.

AkQ kI kQw suxyie ] (1289-5)
akath kee kathaa sunay-ay.
Whoever hears the description of the indescribable,

iriD buiD isiD igAwnu sdw suKu hoie ]1] (1289-5)
riDh buDh siDh gi-aan sadaa sukh ho-ay. ||1||
is blessed with wealth, intelligence, perfection, spiritual wisdom and eternal peace. ||1||

Ajru jrY q nau kul bMDu ] (1289-6)
ajar jarai ta na-o kul banDh.
One who bears the unbearable, controls the nine holes of the body.

poojai paraan hovai thir kanDh.
One who worships and adores the Lord with his breath of life, gains stability in his body-wall.

khW qy AwieAw khW eyhu jwxu ] (1289-6)
kahaaN tay aa-i-aa kahaaN ayhu jaan.
Where has he come from, and where will he go?

jIvq mrq rhY prvwxu ] (1289-7)
jeevat marat rahai parvaan.
Remaining dead while yet alive, he is accepted and approved.

hukmY bUJY qqu pCwxY ] (1289-7)
hukmai boojhai tat pachhaanai.
Whoever understands the Hukam of the Lord's Command, realizes the essence of reality.

iehu prswdu gurU qy jwxY ] (1289-7)
ih parsaad guroo tay jaanai.
This is known by Guru's Grace.

hoNdw PVIAgu nwnk jwxu ] (1289-7)
hoNdaa farhee-ag naanak jaan.
O Nanak, know this: egotism leads to bondage.

nw hau nw mY jUnI pwxu ]2] (1289-8)
naa ha-o naa mai joonee paan. ||2||
Only those who have no ego and no self-conceit, are not consigned to reincarnation. ||2||

parhHee-ai naam saalaah hor buDheeN mithi-aa.
Read the Praise of the Lord's Name; other intellectual pursuits are false.

bin sachay vaapaar janam birthi-aa.
Without dealing in Truth, life is worthless.

AMqu n pwrwvwru n ikn hI pwieAw ] (1289-9)
ant na paaraavaar na kin hee paa-i-aa.
No one has ever found the Lord's end or limitation.

sBu jgu grib gubwru iqn scu n BwieAw ] (1289-9)
sabh jag garab gubaar tin sach na bhaa-i-aa.
All the world is enveloped by the darkness of egotistical pride. It does not like the Truth.

cly nwmu ivswir qwvix qiqAw ] (1289-10)
chalay naam visaar taavan tati-aa.
Those who depart from this world, forgetting the Naam, shall be roasted in the frying pan.

bldI AMdir qylu duibDw GiqAw ] (1289-10)
baldee andar tayl dubiDhaa ghati-aa.
They pour the oil of duality within, and burn.

AwieAw auTI Kylu iPrY auviqAw ] (1289-11)
aa-i-aa uthee khayl firai uvti-aa.
They come into the world and wander around aimlessly; they depart when the play is finished.

nwnk scY mylu scY riqAw ]24] (1289-11)
naanak sachai mayl sachai rati-aa. ||24||
O Nanak, imbued with Truth, the mortals merge in Truth. ||24||

pahilaaN maasahu nimmi-aa maasai andar vaas.
First, the mortal is conceived in the flesh, and then he dwells in the flesh.

jIau pwie mwsu muih imilAw hfu cMmu qnu mwsu ] (1289-12)
jee-o paa-ay maas muhi mili-aa had chamm tan maas.
When he comes alive, his mouth takes flesh; his bones, skin and body are flesh.

mwshu bwhir kiFAw mMmw mwsu igrwsu ] (1289-12)
maasahu baahar kadhi-aa mammaa maas giraas.
He comes out of the womb of flesh, and takes a mouthful of flesh at the breast.

muhu mwsY kw jIB mwsY kI mwsY AMdir swsu ] (1289-13)
muhu maasai kaa jeebh maasai kee maasai andar saas.
His mouth is flesh, his tongue is flesh; his breath is in the flesh.

vfw hoAw vIAwihAw Gir lY AwieAw mwsu ] (1289-13)
vadaa ho-aa vee-aahi-aa ghar lai aa-i-aa maas.
He grows up and is married, and brings his wife of flesh into his home.

mwshu hI mwsu aUpjY mwshu sBo swku ] (1289-14)
maasahu hee maas oopjai maasahu sabho saak.
Flesh is produced from flesh; all relatives are made of flesh.

siqguir imilAY hukmu buJIAY qW ko AwvY rwis ] (1289-14)
satgur mili-ai hukam bujhee-ai taaN ko aavai raas.
When the mortal meets the True Guru, and realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command, then he comes to be reformed.

Awip Cuty nh CUtIAY nwnk bcin ibxwsu ]1] (1289-15)
aap chhutay nah chhootee-ai naanak bachan binaas. ||1||
Releasing himself, the mortal does not find release; O Nanak, through empty words, one is ruined. ||1||

mwsu mwsu kir mUrKu JgVy igAwnu iDAwnu nhI jwxY ] (1289-15)
maas maas kar moorakh jhagrhay gi-aan Dhi-aan nahee jaanai.
The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom.

kauxu mwsu kauxu swgu khwvY iksu mih pwp smwxy ] (1289-16)
ka-un maas ka-un saag kahaavai kis meh paap samaanay.
What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin?

gYNfw mwir hom jg kIey dyviqAw kI bwxy ] (1289-17)
gaiNdaa maar hom jag kee-ay dayviti-aa kee baanay.
It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering.

mwsu Coif bYis nku pkVih rwqI mwxs Kwxy ] (1289-17)
maas chhod bais nak pakrheh raatee maanas khaanay.
Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night.

PVu kir lokW no idKlwvih igAwnu iDAwnu nhI sUJY ] (1289-17)
farh kar lokaaN no dikhlaavahi gi-aan Dhi-aan nahee soojhai.
They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom.

nwnk AMDy isau ikAw khIAY khY n kihAw bUJY ] (1289-18)
naanak anDhay si-o ki-aa kahee-ai kahai na kahi-aa boojhai.
O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said.

AMDw soie ij AMDu kmwvY iqsu irdY is locn nwhI ] (1289-19)
anDhaa so-ay je anDh kamaavai tis ridai se lochan naahee.
They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts.

mwq ipqw kI rkqu inpMny mCI mwsu n KWhI ] (1289-19)
maat pitaa kee rakat nipannay machhee maas na khaaNhee.
They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat.
