Bilaaval, First Mehl:

mn kw kihAw mnsw krY ] (832-1)
man kaa kahi-aa mansaa karai.
The human acts according to the wishes of the mind.

iehu mnu puMnu pwpu aucrY ] (832-1)
ih man punn paap uchrai.
This mind feeds on virtue and vice.

mwieAw mid mwqy iqRpiq n AwvY ] (832-2)
maa-i-aa mad maatay taripat na aavai.
Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, satisfaction never comes.

iqRpiq mukiq min swcw BwvY ]1] (832-2)
taripat mukat man saachaa bhaavai. ||1||
Satisfaction and liberation come, only to one whose mind is pleasing to the True Lord. ||1||

qnu Dnu klqu sBu dyKu AiBmwnw ] (832-2)
tan Dhan kalat sabh daykh abhimaanaa.
Gazing upon his body, wealth, wife and all his possessions, he is proud.

ibnu nwvY ikCu sMig n jwnw ]1] rhwau ] (832-3)
bin naavai kichh sang na jaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But without the Name of the Lord, nothing shall go along with him. ||1||Pause||

kIcih rs Bog KusIAw mn kyrI ] (832-3)
keecheh ras bhog khusee-aa man kayree.
He enjoys tastes, pleasures and joys in his mind.

Dnu lokW qnu BsmY FyrI ] (832-4)
Dhan lokaaN tan bhasmai dhayree.
But his wealth will pass on to other people, and his body will be reduced to ashes.

KwkU Kwku rlY sBu PYlu ] (832-4)
khaakoo khaak ralai sabh fail.
The entire expanse, like dust, shall mix with dust.

ibnu sbdY nhI auqrY mYlu ]2] (832-4)
bin sabdai nahee utrai mail. ||2||
Without the Word of the Shabad, his filth is not removed. ||2||

gIq rwg Gn qwl is kUry ] (832-5)
geet raag ghan taal se kooray.
The various songs, tunes and rhythms are false.

iqRhu gux aupjY ibnsY dUry ] (832-5)
tarihu gun upjai binsai dooray.
Trapped by the three qualities, people come and go, far from the Lord.

dUjI durmiq drdu n jwie ] (832-5)
doojee durmat darad na jaa-ay.
In duality, the pain of their evil-mindedness does not leave them.

CUtY gurmuiK dwrU gux gwie ]3] (832-5)
chhootai gurmukh daaroo gun gaa-ay. ||3||
But the Gurmukh is emancipated by taking the medicine, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

DoqI aUjl iqlku gil mwlw ] (832-6)
Dhotee oojal tilak gal maalaa.
He may wear a clean loin-cloth, apply the ceremonial mark to his forehead, and wear a mala around his neck;

AMqir k®oDu pVih nwt swlw ] (832-6)
antar kroDh parheh naat saalaa.
but if there is anger within him, he is merely reading his part, like an actor in a play.

nwmu ivswir mwieAw mdu pIAw ] (832-7)
naam visaar maa-i-aa mad pee-aa.
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he drinks in the wine of Maya.

ibnu gur Bgiq nwhI suKu QIAw ]4] (832-7)
bin gur bhagat naahee sukh thee-aa. ||4||
Without devotional worship to the Guru, there is no peace. ||4||

sUkr suAwn grDB mMjwrw ] (832-7)
sookar su-aan garDhabh manjaaraa.
The human is a pig, a dog, a donkey, a cat,

pasoo malaychh neech chandalaa.
a beast, a filthy, lowly wretch, an outcast,

gur qy muhu Pyry iqn@ join BvweIAY ] (832-8)
gur tay muhu fayray tinH jon bhavaa-ee-ai.
if he turns his face away from the Guru. He shall wander in reincarnation.

bMDin bwiDAw AweIAY jweIAY ]5] (832-8)
banDhan baaDhi-aa aa-ee-ai jaa-ee-ai. ||5||
Bound in bondage, he comes and goes. ||5||

gur syvw qy lhY pdwrQu ] (832-9)
gur sayvaa tay lahai padaarath.
Serving the Guru, the treasure is found.

ihrdY nwmu sdw ikrqwrQu ] (832-9)
hirdai naam sadaa kirtaarath.
With the Naam in the heart, one always prospers.

swcI drgh pUC n hoie ] (832-9)
saachee dargeh poochh na ho-ay.
And in the Court of the True Lord, you shall not called to account.

mwny hukmu sIJY dir soie ]6] (832-10)
maanay hukam seejhai dar so-ay. ||6||
One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, is approved at the Lord's Door. ||6||

siqguru imlY q iqs kau jwxY ] (832-10)
satgur milai ta tis ka-o jaanai.
Meeting the True Guru, one knows the Lord.

rhY rjweI hukmu pCwxY ] (832-10)
rahai rajaa-ee hukam pachhaanai.
Understanding the Hukam of His Command, one acts according to His Will.

hukmu pCwix scY dir vwsu ] (832-10)
hukam pachhaan sachai dar vaas.
Understanding the Hukam of His Command, he dwells in the Court of the True Lord.

kwl ibkwl sbid Bey nwsu ]7] (832-11)
kaal bikaal sabad bha-ay naas. ||7||
Through the Shabad, death and birth are ended. ||7||

rhY AqIqu jwxY sBu iqs kw ] (832-11)
rahai ateet jaanai sabh tis kaa.
He remains detached, knowing that everything belongs to God.

qnu mnu ArpY hY iehu ijs kw ] (832-11)
tan man arpai hai ih jis kaa.
He dedicates his body and mind unto the One who owns them.

nw Ehu AwvY nw Ehu jwie ] (832-12)
naa oh aavai naa oh jaa-ay.
He does not come, and he does not go.

nwnk swcy swic smwie ]8]2] (832-12)
naanak saachay saach samaa-ay. ||8||2||
O Nanak, absorbed in Truth, he merges in the True Lord. ||8||2||

jag ka-oo-aa mukh chunch gi-aan.
The world is like a crow; with its beak, it croaks spiritual wisdom.

AMqir loBu JUTu AiBmwnu ] (832-14)
antar lobh jhooth abhimaan.
But deep within there is greed, falsehood and pride.

ibnu nwvY pwju lhgu indwin ]1] (832-14)
bin naavai paaj lahag nidaan. ||1||
Without the Name of the Lord, your thin outer covering shall wear off, you fool. ||1||

siqgur syiv nwmu vsY min cIiq ] (832-15)
satgur sayv naam vasai man cheet.
Serving the True Guru, the Naam shall dwell in your conscious mind.

guru Byty hir nwmu cyqwvY ibnu nwvY hor JUTu prIiq ]1] rhwau ] (832-15)
gur bhaytay har naam chaytaavai bin naavai hor jhooth pareet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Meeting with the Guru, the Name of the Lord comes to mind. Without the Name, other loves are false. ||1||Pause||

guir kihAw sw kwr kmwvhu ] (832-16)
gur kahi-aa saa kaar kamaavahu.
So do that work, which the Guru tells you to do.

sbdu cIin@ shj Gir Awvhu ] (832-16)
sabad cheeneh sahj ghar aavhu.
Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, you shall come to the home of celestial bliss.

swcY nwie vfweI pwvhu ]2] (832-16)
saachai naa-ay vadaa-ee paavhu. ||2||
Through the True Name, you shall obtain glorious greatness. ||2||

Awip n bUJY lok buJwvY ] (832-17)
aap na boojhai lok bujhaavai.
One who does not understand his own self, but still tries to instruct others,

mn kw AMDw AMDu kmwvY ] (832-17)
man kaa anDhaa anDh kamaavai.
is mentally blind, and acts in blindness.

dru Gru mhlu Tauru kYsy pwvY ]3] (832-17)
dar ghar mahal tha-ur kaisay paavai. ||3||
How can he ever find a home and a place of rest, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence? ||3||

hir jIau syvIAY AMqrjwmI ] (832-18)
har jee-o sayvee-ai antarjaamee.
Serve the Dear Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts;

Gt Gt AMqir ijs kI joiq smwnI ] (832-18)
ghat ghat antar jis kee jot samaanee.
deep within each and every heart, His Light is shining forth.

iqsu nwil ikAw clY phnwmI ]4] (832-18)
tis naal ki-aa chalai pehnaamee. ||4||
How can anyone hide anything from Him? ||4||
