siqguru syvy Awpxw so isru lyKY lwie ] (88-1)
satgur sayvay aapnaa so sir laykhai laa-ay.
Those who serve their True Guru are certified and accepted.

ivchu Awpu gvwie kY rhin sic ilv lwie ] (88-1)
vichahu aap gavaa-ay kai rahan sach liv laa-ay.
They eradicate selfishness and conceit from within; they remain lovingly absorbed in the True One.

siqguru ijnI n syivE iqnw ibrQw jnmu gvwie ] (88-1)
satgur jinee na sayvi-o tinaa birthaa janam gavaa-ay.
Those who do not serve the True Guru waste away their lives in vain.

nwnk jo iqsu BwvY so kry khxw ikCU n jwie ]1] (88-2)
naanak jo tis bhaavai so karay kahnaa kichhoo na jaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, the Lord does just as He pleases. No one has any say in this. ||1||

Third Mehl:

mnu vykwrI vyiVAw vykwrw krm kmwie ] (88-3)
man vaykaaree vayrhi-aa vaykaaraa karam kamaa-ay.
With the mind encircled by wickedness and evil, people do evil deeds.

dUjY Bwie AigAwnI pUjdy drgh imlY sjwie ] (88-3)
doojai bhaa-ay agi-aanee poojday dargeh milai sajaa-ay.
The ignorant worship the love of duality; in the Lord's Court they shall be punished.

Awqm dyau pUjIAY ibnu siqgur bUJ n pwie ] (88-4)
aatam day-o poojee-ai bin satgur boojh na paa-ay.
So worship the Lord, the Light of the soul; without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained.

jpu qpu sMjmu Bwxw siqgurU kw krmI plY pwie ] (88-4)
jap tap sanjam bhaanaa satguroo kaa karmee palai paa-ay.
Meditation, penance and austere self-discipline are found by surrendering to the True Guru's Will. By His Grace this is received.

nwnk syvw suriq kmwvxI jo hir BwvY so Qwie pwie ]2] (88-5)
naanak sayvaa surat kamaavnee jo har bhaavai so thaa-ay paa-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, serve with this intuitive awareness; only that which is pleasing to the Lord is approved. ||2||

har har naam japahu man mayray jit sadaa sukh hovai din raatee.
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; it will bring you eternal peace, day and night.

hir hir nwmu jphu mn myry ijqu ismrq siB iklivK pwp lhwqI ] (88-6)
har har naam japahu man mayray jit simrat sabh kilvikh paap lahaatee.
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; meditating on it, all sins and misdeeds shall be erased.

hir hir nwmu jphu mn myry ijqu dwldu duK BuK sB lih jwqI ] (88-7)
har har naam japahu man mayray jit daalad dukh bhukh sabh leh jaatee.
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; through it, all poverty, pain and hunger shall be removed.

hir hir nwmu jphu mn myry muiK gurmuiK pRIiq lgwqI ] (88-7)
har har naam japahu man mayray mukh gurmukh pareet lagaatee.
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; as Gurmukh, declare your love.

ijqu muiK Bwgu iliKAw Duir swcY hir iqqu muiK nwmu jpwqI ]13] (88-8)
jit mukh bhaag likhi-aa Dhur saachai har tit mukh naam japaatee. ||13||
One who has such pre-ordained destiny inscribed upon his forehead by the True Lord, chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||13||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

siqguru ijnI n syivE sbid n kIqo vIcwru ] (88-9)
satgur jinee na sayvi-o sabad na keeto veechaar.
Those who do not serve the True Guru, and who do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad

AMqir igAwnu n AwieE imrqku hY sMswir ] (88-9)
antar gi-aan na aa-i-o mirtak hai sansaar.
-spiritual wisdom does not enter into their hearts; they are like dead bodies in the world.

lK caurwsIh Pyru pieAw mir jMmY hoie KuAwru ] (88-10)
lakh cha-oraaseeh fayr pa-i-aa mar jammai ho-ay khu-aar.
They go through the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations, and they are ruined through death and rebirth.

siqgur kI syvw so kry ijs no Awip krwey soie ] (88-11)
satgur kee sayvaa so karay jis no aap karaa-ay so-ay.
He alone serves the True Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so.

siqgur ivic nwmu inDwnu hY krim prwpiq hoie ] (88-11)
satgur vich naam niDhaan hai karam paraapat ho-ay.
The Treasure of the Naam is within the True Guru; by His Grace, it is obtained.

sic rqy gur sbd isau iqn scI sdw ilv hoie ] (88-12)
sach ratay gur sabad si-o tin sachee sadaa liv ho-ay.
Those who are truly attuned to the Word of the Guru's Shabad-their love is forever True.

nwnk ijs no myly n ivCuVY shij smwvY soie ]1] (88-12)
naanak jis no maylay na vichhurhai sahj samaavai so-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, those who are united with Him shall not be separated again. They merge imperceptibly into God. ||1||

so BgauqI juo BgvMqY jwxY ] (88-13)
so bhag-utee jo bhagvantai jaanai.
One who knows the Benevolent Lord God is the true devotee of Bhagaautee.

gur prswdI Awpu pCwxY ] (88-13)
gur parsaadee aap pachhaanai.
By Guru's Grace, he is self-realized.

Dwvqu rwKY iekqu Gir AwxY ] (88-13)
Dhaavat raakhai ikat ghar aanai.
He restrains his wandering mind, and brings it back to its own home within the self.

jIvqu mrY hir nwmu vKwxY ] (88-14)
jeevat marai har naam vakhaanai.
He remains dead while yet alive, and he chants the Name of the Lord.

AYsw BgauqI auqmu hoie ] (88-14)
aisaa bhag-utee utam ho-ay.
Such a Bhagaautee is most exalted.

nwnk sic smwvY soie ]2] (88-14)
naanak sach samaavai so-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, he merges into the True One. ||2||

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:

AMqir kptu BgauqI khwey ] (88-15)
antar kapat bhag-utee kahaa-ay.
He is full of deceit, and yet he calls himself a devotee of Bhagaautee.

pwKMif pwrbRhmu kdy n pwey ] (88-15)
pakhand paarbarahm kaday na paa-ay.
Through hypocrisy, he shall never attain the Supreme Lord God.

pr inMdw kry AMqir mlu lwey ] (88-15)
par nindaa karay antar mal laa-ay.
He slanders others, and pollutes himself with his own filth.

bwhir mlu DovY mn kI jUiT n jwey ] (88-16)
baahar mal Dhovai man kee jooth na jaa-ay.
Outwardly, he washes off the filth, but the impurity of his mind does not go away.

sqsMgiq isau bwdu rcwey ] (88-16)
satsangat si-o baad rachaa-ay.
He argues with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

Anidnu duKIAw dUjY Bwie rcwey ] (88-17)
an-din dukhee-aa doojai bhaa-ay rachaa-ay.
Night and day, he suffers, engrossed in the love of duality.

hir nwmu n cyqY bhu krm kmwey ] (88-17)
har naam na chaytai baho karam kamaa-ay.
He does not remember the Name of the Lord, but still, he performs all sorts of empty rituals.

pUrb iliKAw su mytxw n jwey ] (88-17)
poorab likhi-aa so maytnaa na jaa-ay.
That which is pre-ordained cannot be erased.

nwnk ibnu siqgur syvy moKu n pwey ]3] (88-18)
naanak bin satgur sayvay mokh na paa-ay. ||3||
O Nanak, without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||3||

pa-orhee.
Pauree:

siqguru ijnI iDAwieAw sy kiV n svwhI ] (88-18)
satgur jinee Dhi-aa-i-aa say karh na savaahee.
Those who meditate on the True Guru shall not be burnt to ashes.

siqguru ijnI iDAwieAw sy iqRpiq AGwhI ] (88-19)
satgur jinee Dhi-aa-i-aa say taripat aghaahee.
Those who meditate on the True Guru are satisfied and fulfilled.

siqguru ijnI iDAwieAw iqn jm fru nwhI ] (88-19)
satgur jinee Dhi-aa-i-aa tin jam dar naahee.
Those who meditate on the True Guru are not afraid of the Messenger of Death.
