Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.

sun bharthar naanak kahai beechaar.
Listen, O Bharthari Yogi - Nanak speaks after deliberation;

nirmal naam mayraa aaDhaar. ||8||1||
the Immaculate Name is my only Support. ||8||1||

aasaa mehlaa 1.
Aasaa, First Mehl:

siB jp siB qp sB cqurweI ] (412-2)
sabh jap sabh tap sabh chaturaa-ee.
All meditation, all austerities, and all clever tricks,

aUJiV BrmY rwih n pweI ] (412-2)
oojharh bharmai raahi na paa-ee.
lead one to wander in the wilderness, but he does not find the Path.

ibnu bUJy ko Qwie n pweI ] (412-2)
bin boojhay ko thaa-ay na paa-ee.
Without understanding, he is not approved;

nwm ibhUxY mwQy CweI ]1] (412-3)
naam bihoonai maathay chhaa-ee. ||1||
without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, ashes are thrown upon one's head. ||1||

swc DxI jgu Awie ibnwsw ] (412-3)
saach Dhanee jag aa-ay binaasaa.
True is the Master; the world comes and goes.

CUtis pRwxI gurmuiK dwsw ]1] rhwau ] (412-3)
chhootas paraanee gurmukh daasaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The mortal is emancipated, as Gurmukh, as the Lord's slave. ||1||Pause||

jgu moih bwDw bhuqI Awsw ] (412-4)
jag mohi baaDhaa bahutee aasaa.
The world is bound by its attachments to the many desires.

gurmqI ieik Bey audwsw ] (412-4)
gurmatee ik bha-ay udaasaa.
Through the Guru's Teachings, some become free of desire.

AMqir nwmu kmlu prgwsw ] (412-4)
antar naam kamal pargaasaa.
Within them is the Naam, and their heart lotus blossoms forth.

iqn@ kau nwhI jm kI qRwsw ]2] (412-5)
tinH ka-o naahee jam kee taraasaa. ||2||
They have no fear of death. ||2||

jgu iqRA ijqu kwmix ihqkwrI ] (412-5)
jag tari-a jit kaaman hitkaaree.
The men of the world are conquered by woman; they love the ladies.

puqR klqR lig nwmu ivswrI ] (412-5)
putar kaltar lag naam visaaree.
Attached to children and wife, they forget the Naam.

ibrQw jnmu gvwieAw bwjI hwrI ] (412-6)
birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa baajee haaree.
They waste this human life in vain, and lose the game in the gamble.

siqguru syvy krxI swrI ]3] (412-6)
satgur sayvay karnee saaree. ||3||
Serving the True Guru is the best occupation. ||3||

bwhrhu haumY khY khwey ] (412-7)
baahrahu ha-umai kahai kahaa-ay.
One who speaks egotistically in public,

AMdrhu mukqu lypu kdy n lwey ] (412-7)
andrahu mukat layp kaday na laa-ay.
never attains liberation within.

mwieAw mohu gur sbid jlwey ] (412-7)
maa-i-aa moh gur sabad jalaa-ay.
One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru's Shabad,

inrml nwmu sd ihrdY iDAwey ]4] (412-8)
nirmal naam sad hirdai Dhi-aa-ay. ||4||
meditates forever within his heart on the Immaculate Naam. ||4||

Dwvqu rwKY Twik rhwey ] (412-8)
Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay.
He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control.

isK sMgiq krim imlwey ] (412-8)
sikh sangat karam milaa-ay.
The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace.

gur ibnu BUlo AwvY jwey ] (412-8)
gur bin bhoolo aavai jaa-ay.
Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going.

ndir kry sMjoig imlwey ]5] (412-9)
nadar karay sanjog milaa-ay. ||5||
Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||

rUVo khau n kihAw jweI ] (412-9)
roorho kaha-o na kahi-aa jaa-ee.
I cannot describe the Beauteous Lord.

AkQ kQau nh kImiq pweI ] (412-9)
akath katha-o nah keemat paa-ee.
I speak the unspoken; I cannot estimate His value.

sB duK qyry sUK rjweI ] (412-10)
sabh dukh tayray sookh rajaa-ee.
All pain and pleasure come by Your Will.

siB duK myty swcY nweI ]6] (412-10)
sabh dukh maytay saachai naa-ee. ||6||
All pain is eradicated by the True Name. ||6||

kar bin vaajaa pag bin taalaa.
He plays the instrument without hands, and dances without feet.

jy sbdu buJY qw scu inhwlw ] (412-11)
jay sabad bujhai taa sach nihaalaa.
But if he understands the Word of the Shabad, then he shall behold the True Lord.

AMqir swcu sBy suK nwlw ] (412-11)
antar saach sabhay sukh naalaa.
With the True Lord within the self, all happiness comes.

ndir kry rwKY rKvwlw ]7] (412-11)
nadar karay raakhai rakhvaalaa. ||7||
Showering His Mercy, the Preserving Lord preserves him. ||7||

iqRBvx sUJY Awpu gvwvY ] (412-12)
taribhavan soojhai aap gavaavai.
He understands the three worlds; he eliminates his self-conceit.

bwxI bUJY sic smwvY ] (412-12)
banee boojhai sach samaavai.
He understands the Bani of the Word, and he is absorbed into the True Lord.

sbdu vIcwry eyk ilv qwrw ] (412-12)
sabad veechaaray ayk liv taaraa.
Contemplating the Shabad, he enshrines love for the One Lord.

naanak Dhan savaaranhaaraa. ||8||2||
O Nanak, blessed is the Lord, the Embellisher. ||8||2||

laykh asaNkh likh likh maan.
There are innumerable writings; those who write them take pride in them.

man maanee-ai sach surat vakhaan.
When one's mind accepts the Truth, he understands, and speaks of it.

kQnI bdnI piV piV Bwru ] (412-14)
kathnee badnee parh parh bhaar.
Words, spoken and read again and again, are useless loads.

lyK AsMK AlyKu Apwru ]1] (412-14)
laykh asaNkh alaykh apaar. ||1||
There are innumerable writings, but the Infinite Lord remains unwritten. ||1||

AYsw swcw qUM eyko jwxu ] (412-14)
aisaa saachaa tooN ayko jaan.
Know that such a True Lord is the One and only.

jMmxu mrxw hukmu pCwxu ]1] rhwau ] (412-15)
jaman marnaa hukam pachhaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Understand that birth and death come according to the Lord's Will. ||1||Pause||

mwieAw moih jgu bwDw jmkwil ] (412-15)
maa-i-aa mohi jag baaDhaa jamkaal.
Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death.

bWDw CUtY nwmu sm@wil ] (412-15)
baaNDhaa chhootai naam samHaal.
These bonds are released when one remembers the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

guru suKdwqw Avru n Bwil ] (412-16)
gur sukh-daata avar na bhaal.
The Guru is the Giver of peace; do not look for any other.

hliq pliq inbhI quDu nwil ]2] (412-16)
halat palat nibhee tuDh naal. ||2||
In this world, and the next, He shall stand by you. ||2||

sbid mrY qW eyk ilv lwey ] (412-16)
sabad marai taaN ayk liv laa-ay.
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad, embraces love for the One Lord.

Acru crY qW Brmu cukwey ] (412-17)
achar charai taaN bharam chukaa-ay.
One who eats the uneatable, has his doubts dispelled.

jIvn mukqu min nwmu vswey ] (412-17)
jeevan mukat man naam vasaa-ay.
He is Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive; the Naam abides in his mind.

gurmuiK hoie q sic smwey ]3] (412-17)
gurmukh ho-ay ta sach samaa-ay. ||3||
Becoming Gurmukh, he merges into the True Lord. ||3||

ijin Dr swjI ggnu Akwsu ] (412-18)
jin Dhar saajee gagan akaas.
The One who created the earth and the Akaashic ethers of the sky,

ijin sB QwpI Qwip auQwip ] (412-18)
jin sabh thaapee thaap uthaap.
established all; He establishes and disestablishes.

srb inrMqir Awpy Awip ] (412-18)
sarab nirantar aapay aap.
He Himself is permeating all.

iksY n pUCy bKsy Awip ]4] (412-19)
kisai na poochhay bakhsay aap. ||4||
He does not consult anyone; He Himself forgives. ||4||

qU puru swgru mwxk hIru ] (412-19)
too pur saagar maanak heer.
You are the Ocean, over-flowing with jewels and rubies.

qU inrmlu scu guxI ghIru ] (412-19)
too nirmal sach gunee gaheer.
You are immaculate and pure, the true treasure of virtue.
