kalar khaytee tarvar kanthay baagaa pahirahi kajal jharai.
He is like the crop planted in the salty soil, or the tree growing on the river bank, or the white clothes sprinkled with dirt.

eyhu sMswru iqsY kI koTI jo pYsY so grib jrY ]6] (1016-1)
ayhu sansaar tisai kee kothee jo paisai so garab jarai. ||6||
This world is the house of desire; whoever enters it, is burnt down by egotistical pride. ||6||

rXiq rwjy khw sbwey duhu AMqir so jwsI ] (1016-2)
ra-yat raajay kahaa sabaa-ay duhu antar so jaasee.
Where are all the kings and their subjects? Those who are immersed in duality are destroyed.

khq nwnku gur scy kI pauVI rhsI AlKu invwsI ]7]3]11] (1016-2)
kahat naanak gur sachay kee pa-orhee rahsee alakh nivaasee. ||7||3||11||
Says Nanak, these are the steps of the ladder, of the Teachings of the True Guru; only the Unseen Lord shall remain. ||7||3||11||

jis no paraym man vasaa-ay.
One whose mind is filled with the Lord's Love,

swcY sbid shij suBwey ] (1016-5)
saachai sabad sahj subhaa-ay.
is intuitively exalted by the True Word of the Shabad.

eyhw vydn soeI jwxY Avru ik jwxY kwrI jIau ]1] (1016-5)
ayhaa vaydan so-ee jaanai avar ke jaanai kaaree jee-o. ||1||
He alone knows the pain of this love; what does anyone else know about its cure? ||1||

Awpy myly Awip imlwey ] (1016-6)
aapay maylay aap milaa-ay.
He Himself unites in His Union.

Awpxw ipAwru Awpy lwey ] (1016-6)
aapnaa pi-aar aapay laa-ay.
He Himself inspires us with His Love.

pRym kI swr soeI jwxY ijs no ndir qumwrI jIau ]1] rhwau ] (1016-6)
paraym kee saar so-ee jaanai jis no nadar tumaaree jee-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He alone appreciates the value of Your Love, upon whom You shower Your Grace, O Lord. ||1||Pause||

idb idRsit jwgY Brmu cukwey ] (1016-7)
dib darisat jaagai bharam chukaa-ay.
One whose spiritual vision is awakened - his doubt is driven out.

gur prswid prm pdu pwey ] (1016-7)
gur parsaad param pad paa-ay.
By Guru's Grace, he obtains the supreme status.

so jogI ieh jugiq pCwxY gur kY sbid bIcwrI jIau ]2] (1016-8)
so jogee ih jugat pachhaanai gur kai sabad beechaaree jee-o. ||2||
He alone is a Yogi, who understands this way, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

sMjogI Dn ipr mylw hovY ] (1016-8)
sanjogee Dhan pir maylaa hovai.
By good destiny, the soul-bride is united with her Husband Lord.

gurmiq ivchu durmiq KovY ] (1016-9)
gurmat vichahu durmat khovai.
Following the Guru's Teachings, she eradicates her evil-mindedness from within.

rang si-o nit ralee-aa maanai apnay kant pi-aaree jee-o. ||3||
With love, she continually enjoys pleasure with Him; she becomes the beloved of her Husband Lord. ||3||

siqgur bwJhu vYdu n koeI ] (1016-10)
satgur baajhahu vaid na ko-ee.
Other than the True Guru, there is no physician.

Awpy Awip inrMjnu soeI ] (1016-10)
aapay aap niranjan so-ee.
He Himself is the Immaculate Lord.

siqgur imilAY mrY mMdw hovY igAwn bIcwrI jIau ]4] (1016-10)
satgur mili-ai marai mandaa hovai gi-aan beechaaree jee-o. ||4||
Meeting with the True Guru, evil is conquered, and spiritual wisdom is contemplated. ||4||

eyhu sbdu swru ijs no lwey ] (1016-11)
ayhu sabad saar jis no laa-ay.
One who is committed to this most sublime Shabad

gurmuiK iqRsnw BuK gvwey ] (1016-11)
gurmukh tarisnaa bhukh gavaa-ay.
becomes Gurmukh, and is rid of thirst and hunger.

Awpx lIAw ikCU n pweIAY kir ikrpw kl DwrI jIau ]5] (1016-12)
aapan lee-aa kichhoo na paa-ee-ai kar kirpaa kal Dhaaree jee-o. ||5||
By one's own efforts, nothing can be accomplished; the Lord, in His Mercy, bestows power. ||5||

Agm ingmu siqgurU idKwieAw ] (1016-12)
agam nigam satguroo dikhaa-i-aa.
The True Guru has revealed the essence of the Shaastras and the Vedas.

kir ikrpw ApnY Gir AwieAw ] (1016-13)
kar kirpaa apnai ghar aa-i-aa.
In His Mercy, He has come into the home of my self.

AMjn mwih inrMjnu jwqw ijn kau ndir qumwrI jIau ]6] (1016-13)
anjan maahi niranjan jaataa jin ka-o nadar tumaaree jee-o. ||6||
In the midst of Maya, the Immaculate Lord is known, by those upon whom You bestow Your Grace. ||6||

gurmuiK hovY so qqu pwey ] (1016-14)
gurmukh hovai so tat paa-ay.
One who becomes Gurmukh, obtains the essence of reality;

Awpxw Awpu ivchu gvwey ] (1016-14)
aapnaa aap vichahu gavaa-ay.
he eradictes his self-conceit from within.

siqgur bwJhu sBu DMDu kmwvY vyKhu min vIcwrI jIau ]7] (1016-14)
satgur baajhahu sabh DhanDh kamaavai vaykhhu man veechaaree jee-o. ||7||
Without the True Guru, all are entangled in worldly affairs; consider this in your mind, and see. ||7||

ieik BRim BUly iPrih AhMkwrI ] (1016-15)
ik bharam bhoolay fireh ahaNkaaree.
Some are deluded by doubt; they strut around egotistically.

ieknw gurmuiK haumY mwrI ] (1016-15)
iknaa gurmukh ha-umai maaree.
Some, as Gurmukh, subdue their egotism.

scY sbid rqy bYrwgI hoir Brim Buly gwvwrI jIau ]8] (1016-16)
sachai sabad ratay bairaagee hor bharam bhulay gaavaaree jee-o. ||8||
Attuned to the True Word of the Shabad, they remain detached from the world. The other ignorant fools wander, confused and deluded by doubt. ||8||

gurmuiK ijnI nwmu n pwieAw ] (1016-16)
gurmukh jinee naam na paa-i-aa.
Those who have not become Gurmukh, and who have not found the Naam, the Name of the Lord

mnmuiK ibrQw jnmu gvwieAw ] (1016-17)
manmukh birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
- those self-willed manmukhs waste their lives uselessly.

AgY ivxu nwvY ko bylI nwhI bUJY gur bIcwrI jIau ]9] (1016-17)
agai vin naavai ko baylee naahee boojhai gur beechaaree jee-o. ||9||
In the world hereafter, nothing except the Name will be of any assistance; this is understood by contemplating the Guru. ||9||

AMimRq nwmu sdw suKdwqw ] (1016-18)
amrit naam sadaa sukh-daata.
The Ambrosial Naam is the Giver of peace forever.

guir pUrY jug cwry jwqw ] (1016-18)
gur poorai jug chaaray jaataa.
Throughout the four ages, it is known through the Perfect Guru.

ijsu qU dyvih soeI pwey nwnk qqu bIcwrI jIau ]10]1] (1016-18)
jis too dayveh so-ee paa-ay naanak tat beechaaree jee-o. ||10||1||
He alone receives it, unto whom You bestow it; this is the essence of reality which Nanak has realized. ||10||1||
